It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, baba, great baba on Friday, June 28, 2019, peacefully in her sleep.
She is survived by her children; Myron (Fran), Leona (Martin), Pat (Paul), Paulette (Doug), daughter in law Bernice; grandchildren Brent, Ryan, Melissa, Mason, Hilary, Hayley; Great-grandchildren; Emma, Scarlett, Avery and Quinn. She is also survived by one sister; Ann, at 107 of age.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Paul on February 18, 1973, son Ned on April 9, 2009, brothers; Fred, Peter, Jim, sisters; Barbara, Margaret, Helen and an infant sister.
Mom was born in Pansy, Manitoba on May 10, 1922, to John and Nastasia Pidsadny, she lived in Pansy until she met the love of her life, Paul Smuk, and got married in 1938. They lived in Sarto, Manitoba with Paul’s parents, where Paul operated Sarto Transfer. They moved to Steinbach in 1954.
Mom loved gardening and flowers. She looked after the camping grounds in Steinbach. Mom was a kind and loving person who freely gave herself to others. Family was such a large part of her life, doing all she could for them. Loving her family unconditionally. She cherished this time and enjoyed many family dinners filled with her kindness, humor, generosity and plenty of delicious cooking.
After her husband passed away at the early age of 52, mom sold Paul’s Service Station and bought a home on poplar Crescent in Steinbach. She worked at Granny’s Poultry until she was 70 years old.
After retiring, mom with her friend, Effie Henzel, would go get their hair done every Saturday. After they would go for lunch at A&W. Their favorite outing was attending dance functions, especially dances her sons were playing at.
Mom also was a member of the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church all her life.
The funeral service will be held Friday, July 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB with interment at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Sarto, MB.
