Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce Joahnn Nissen Wiens, aged 69, of Mitchell, Manitoba, passed away after a hard, but short illness on Friday, December 11th, 2020 at the Brandon Prairie Mountain Health Hospital, surrounded by his wife and kids.

Johann is survived by his second wife, Katrina (Tina), his sons, Elmer and Ewald, and his daughter Naemi (Amy); his grandchildren: Austin, Kairi, Tobi, and Jazmyn. He is also survived by his father Cornelios, brothers Jakob, Willhelm, Hein, and Peter; his sisters: Katharina, Anna, Lena, Liese, Wanda, Bertha and Martha; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is predeceased by his first wife Gertruda (Trudie), his mother Katharina, and a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He was born on January 28th, 1951, in Paraguay, where he met his first wife Trudie. Together they had two sons Elmer and Ewald followed by their daughter Amy, once moving to Canada. Early life in Niverville started out difficult, but Johann was not afraid of hard work. It took little time before the family moved to their first real house in Canada, where they spent just over ten years. Eventually, the opportunity presented itself that John and Trudie could fulfill one of their lifelong dreams and the family moved to a small hobby-farm near Steinbach. As time continued grandchildren began arriving and brought even greater joy to their family. Sadly, in 2018, after more than 40 years of marriage, Johann lost Trudie after a sudden and difficult fight with cancer. After one of the hardest times in his life, he was introduced to Tina, who brought the light back into his life. They married in 2019 and his family grow even larger.

Johann’s life was filled with love for the Lord and for his ever-growing family. He was always willing to help the church or family. Whether it was cutting grass, reading the Bible to inmates at Stoney Mountain Penitentiary, or lending his voice to the church choir. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. But the times when we all saw the biggest smile on his face was when he was surrounded by family and friends.

A private family livestreamed funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 17th, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba. Interment will follow at Hespeler Cemetery in Niverville, Manitoba.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandon, Prairie Mountain Health Hospital.
