Obituary

On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, Justina Rempel, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother, passed on to her eternal home.

She is survived by two daughters: Marie Friesen (Lorne) and Anne Neufeld (John); two sons: Henry (Grace) and David (Eva); and two daughters-in-law Hanna Rempel and Marie Rempel. She was predeceased by husband Abram Rempel, one daughter Justina, and her sons: Abram and George.

Justina Rempel was born to Justina and Gerhard Enns on December 18, 1908 in Neuendorf, Ukraine. Her early life was dominated by the horrors and hardships of World War I, followed by the Russian revolution, the anarchy and attacks of the Makhno bands, epidemic typhus and famine. Her father, Gerhard Enns, died of epidemic typhus on December 19, 1919, as did her youngest sister, Anna, five days later. Her mother, Justina Enns, married Isaak Tschetter in November 1920.

The family emigrated to Canada in 1923. They arrived in Winkler. Then they moved to Rosengart, in 1925 to Stephenfield, and to Oak Lake in 1928. At age 17, mother spent the next three winters working for families in Winnipeg. All money earned was sent home to the Tschetter family.

When they moved to Oak Lake, Abram Rempel assisted the Tschetter family in their move to a farm. Abram Rempel and Justina Enns were married a year later, on June 27, 1929. In 1948, the family moved from Oak Lake to Randolph, where they successfully operated a dairy farm for twenty years. Our parents retired to Steinbach in 1968. Our father passed away in 1997; mother maintained her independent living at Fernwood Place for another 13 years.

We especially extend our appreciation to her dedicated care providers: caregivers at Bethesda Place, Maplewood Manor and the St. Adolphe Personal Care Home, as well as the medical staff at the Bethesda Hospital.

The funeral service for Justina will be on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach MB, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow at the Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Justina may be made to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
