Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Sonia Cumming on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at the age of 76.

Sonia will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her son Craig (Sheryl), daughter Laurel (Pat), grandchildren Zac, Carson, and Ainsley, stepdaughters Melanie and Angele (Michael, Hudson, Rhemi), companion dog Daisy, and many friends around the world. Sonia had a special bond with childhood friend Cheryl Barden and a friendship that more resembled sisterhood with Millie Wright.

Sonia was predeceased by her parents, Horace (1984) & Gladys (1998), husband Malcolm (2000), and partner Gary (2022).

Sonia was born in Tonbridge, Kent, UK, on March 9, 1946. She and Malcolm were married on September 23, 1967 and immigrated to Canada on February 9, 1968. Sonia & Malcolm were made very welcome by the Legrand family upon their arrival to Winnipeg and proceeded to make their home in various Winnipeg neighbourhoods for eight years. They welcomed Craig in 1972, Laurel in 1974, and moved to Ste. Anne in 1976.

Sonia started her career in Canada at CIBC in 1969, followed by Great-West Life from 1978-1992. Never one to remain idle, Sonia went to aesthetician school and started her own home-based business, Onyx Nail & Skin Care in 1993. She also worked at Ste. Anne Collegiate for many years, alongside close friend Pam Lowry. Sonia cherished the many friendships she gained throughout her working life.

Sonia loved to travel. She and Malcolm traveled frequently throughout their marriage, returning from the Dominican Republic only days before Malcolm’s passing in April of 2000. Sonia’s love of travel continued during her relationship with Gary; they went on many fun adventures together.

Sonia loved reading, crocheting, sewing, and shopping – mostly for others. She also had a special fondness of animals. Above all, Sonia loved her family and friends; her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. Sonia was kind, caring, selfless, and would only be happy if she knew that she had made someone else happy or had lightened their load in some way. Sonia was an angel walking among us and we were fortunate to have been blessed with her in our lives.

Rest in Peace dear Mum, Nana, and friend.
