Obituary

Peacefully, on April 17, 2018, Arthur Baerg, father, grandfather, great-grandfather passed away at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, Manitoba, just shy of 97 years of age.

Art was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan on May 31, 1921, the youngest of six children. His growing up years in the Hepburn area were interrupted with a bout of polio when he was 9 or 10. Art met Rosella Rempel and they were married in Steinbach, Manitoba on May 27, 1944.

Art was an accountant, first for Regehr Motors in Steinbach, then for Loewen Garage, before moving to J.R. Friesen Ford for the bulk of his working years. When the opportunity arose, Art purchased this dealership with three other partners, renaming it Fairway Ford. Even after his retirement, Art continued working for the Steinbach Automobile Dealers, as well as for Harvest Honda, in an accounting capacity.

After Rosella’s passing in 2005, Art moved to Fernwood Manor, and eventually to Rest Haven Nursing Home. A special thank you is extended to the staff at Rest Haven and to Dr. Curtis Krahn for their wonderful care.

Art was a founding member of Grace Mennonite Church, and served on council and as a deacon for many years. Music was always very special to Art; he sang in and directed many choirs, and he spent many hours singing (baritone) in a quartet with three good friends from Grace Church. Rosella loved popular music, especially Elvis Presley; Art loved choral music; Rosella loved sports of all kinds; Art loved the opera and symphony. Together they passed on wonderful experiences and opportunities to their children and grandchildren. Art was a spiffy dresser and attentive to details. He was interested in and welcoming to the many people he came to know. Art lived out his faith in God in practical ways to all he come in contact with.

Dad will be remembered as a gentle, kind and soft-spoken man.

Art (Dad) will be missed by daughters Joanne (Bob) Banman and Bonny (Jim) Peters, grandchildren David (Anne) Banman, Heidi (Randal) Reimer, Jason (Amanda) Peters, Jonathan (Yolanda) Peters, Chris (Lana) Peters, and great-grandchildren Daniel Banman, Robert Banman, Ella Reimer, Nikolas Reimer, Jesse Peters and Samantha Peters. He also leaves to mourn his adoptive sister Sara Braun.

Art was predeceased by wife Rosella, sister Elsie Harms, brothers Sam Baerg, Ed Baerg, Wilfred Baerg and Rueben Baerg.

A Celebration Service will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Grace Mennonite Church, 430 Third Street, Steinbach, Manitoba
