Obituary

Minna Loewen, age 100, of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away on December 3rd, 2024, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.

She was born to loving Christian parents Elisabeth & Isaac Loewen on January 11, 1924. She was baptized as a teenager in the Blumenort EMC Church. Second oldest of 10, Minna had the opportunity to be involved in the mixed farm where they lived. She enjoyed looking after the chickens, feeding them wet mash so they would lay more eggs. After grading, the eggs were shipped to Winnipeg or sold to private homes.

Minna was an avid seamstress. After taking a course, she sewed for family and missionaries. She made her own patterns and could make whatever was requested. Her mother would take apart thrifted items and Minna would sew beautiful new wool coats.

Minna enjoyed traveling including a trip to Israel where she experienced a camel ride. Together with her mother, she enjoyed many road excursions in her trustworthy red car to see family and friends. Sometimes her travel was combined with work on fruit farms in B.C. or Ontario or up north in a nursing home. At age 30 she embarked on a professional career as a nurse. She upgraded to Grade 10 and then trained with her sister Wilma at Concordia Hospital.

Minna always enjoyed children whether that was working with infants in the maternity ward, serving as a Sunday school teacher, or when entertaining her nieces and nephews. She is fondly remembered for the special relationships she developed with her many nieces and nephews. She prayed for each one by name.

In 2003 Minna had a stroke. She recovered and lived independently until 2020 when was unable to get up after a fall. She was admitted to hospital and then entered care – first in Vita and then in Steinbach. She eagerly awaited the move to her final home in heaven. Her sister Valida and her friend Agnes were at her side when she passed.

Minna was predeceased by her parents Isaac and Elisabeth, siblings Mary, Peter, George, John, Leonard, Edwin and Anna.

She is survived by sisters Wilma and Valida and many nieces and nephews.

The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
