Obituary
Sarah Klassen neé Martens, age 77, of Grunthal, Manitoba, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years Dave, children Aaron & Joelle, Bill & Candace, Sara and grandsons, Adam and Jareth.
She is predeceased by her parents Jacob and Mary Martens, brothers, William, John, Herb and Cornie, sisters-in-law, Marge, Aloha, and Jesse.
Sarah was born in Steinbach November 16, 1948, to Jacob & Mary Martens. She grew up in the Ridgewood area on the family farm. She attended the local one room school at Ridgewood South and later the Steinbach Collegiate. After school she lived in Alberta for a while and then came back and worked at the Grace Hospital to train as a health care aide.
In 1972, while working at Granny’s Poultry, Sarah met Dave. They were married in July of 1973. Aaron came along in 1975, Bill in 1976 and Sara in 1979. They lived for a while in Blumenort, before moving to the old family farm. Later, they lived south of Steinbach for over 30 years before “retiring” to Grunthal.
Sarah was baptized in Chortiz church. She was an active volunteer in church working in the kitchen and with the Joy Dinner at Steinbach Christian Felowship. Sarah was always interested in history and genealogy. She worked at the Mennonite Heritage Museum for many years and was active in the Ladies Auxiliary. She worked for over 20 years as a health care aide for homecare.
In the past few years, she enjoyed seeing her grandsons grow up and enjoying their different music concerts and events and traveling with Dave.
The family wishes to thank all the homecare workers and hospital staff for all the wonderful care that Sarah received.
The viewing will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., with devotional beginning at 7:30 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with viewing one hour prior to the service, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. with reception at the Chapel following the service.
Interment to follow the funeral service at the Grunthal Cemetery, there will be a faspa after the interment at the Grunthal New Horizon’s Club.
