Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Ewald Boschmann (18 May 1952 – 3 July 2026), beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. After a brief hospitalization, Ewald passed away surrounded by his family at the age of 74 years.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Janet of 48 years, children Christin, Eric (Carissa), and Kathryn (Jonathan), and his first grandchild Jane, as well as his brother Irvin (Linda), and numerous extended family members and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Diedrich and Adina Boschmann.

Born in Stuartburn, Manitoba, Ewald grew up on the family farm surrounded by Mennonite and German relatives. His family attended Stuartburn Gospel Chapel where he met Janet Koop. The couple married in 1978 and lived in Winnipeg for many years before returning to the family farm in 1993 with their 3 children. Ewald and Janet attended Arnaud Mennonite Church for 31 years. Ewald lived out his commitment to his church family and faith by serving as deacon, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, worship leader, and occasional speaker.

Ewald worked as a civil servant in Manitoba Finance for around 30 years, with his last 3 years spent as Deputy Minister of Finance, and many of his closest friendships were formed in this chapter of his life.

He spent most of his time off in the summers working on the field with his father and, later, his children. In retirement he found great joy in his small herd of cattle and various projects on the farm, including a large garden, making maple syrup, and baking bread.

In 2017, Ewald was diagnosed with leukemia and survived under the excellent care of the doctors, nurses, and other health care staff at CancerCare Manitoba. We are so grateful for the additional years we were given with Ewald due to their care.

A memorial celebrating Ewald’s life will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel Co-op in Steinbach with a reception to follow.
