Obituary

Marvin Warkentin, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at Maplewood Manor in Steinbach, Manitoba.

Marvin Warkentin was born to John D. and Mary Penner Warkentin on March 1, 1939 in Steinbach, Manitoba and passed away on July 8, 2026, at 87 years of age. His childhood was spent in the Greenland area with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters and he enjoyed having many cousins nearby for fun times.

At the age of 14 Marvin was converted and baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. He served the Lord faithfully. Marvin married the love of his life, Lois Barkman on June 28, 1966, at Greenland, Manitoba. They were happily married for 60 years. In 1967 they moved to Grandview, Manitoba. The first crop they planted froze before harvest and it made for hard times. Here 2 sons and 2 daughters were born to them.

In 1976 Dad and Mom moved several miles closer to church and the rest of the congregation and lived there until retirement. They farmed grain and hogs for many years. Dad enjoyed carpentry and was very precise in his woodworking. In 1988 they had a good canola crop and the next year were able to build a new house. This was a family project. Dad loved singing. He was especially fond of good quartet singing. He was a song leader for many years.

Dad and Mom went to cook in Slidell after Hurricane Katrina. This was a real highlight for them. Dad had an interesting sense of humour. He was not a forward person but he loved to visit. He was very fond of his grandchildren and so delighted with the great grandchildren. In 2014 Dad and Mom moved to a house in town and then spent the last couple of years living in an apartment. A month ago they moved to Maplewood Manor in Steinbach where Dad received excellent care until his passing.

Remembering him with love are his wife Lois, his children Marilyn & Merv Goossen, Pine River MB; Earl & Lorna Warkentin, Grandview, MB; Mark & Charlene Warkentin, Wembley, AB; Barb Warkentin, Rosenort, MB. Eleven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren. His sisters Virginia & Victor Toews, Mildred & Harry Isaac, brother-in-law Percy Goossen, sister-in-law Mary Anne Warkentin. Lois’s siblings: sister-in-law Wilma Barkman, Kathy & Howard Penner, Dennis & Carol Barkman, David & Karen Barkman, Darlene & Gordon Harris, Glenna & Les Giesbrecht, Galen & Charlene Barkman, and Ruth & James Bartel.

He was predeceased by their first born infant son, 2 brothers, 1 sister, 3 brothers-in-law, and 2 sisters-in-law.

The viewing and memories will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, 145 Rd N, Grandview, MB.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., at Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, 145 Rd N, Grandview, MB., with interment to follow at the church cemetery.
