Obituary

In loving memory of Katharina Unrau, who passed away on Monday, July 13, 2026, at 7:50 am, at Rest Haven in Steinbach, Manitoba at the age of 88 years, 3 months, 13 days. Katharina was predeceased by 3 children, Isaak, Heinrich, and Sara; 1 son-in-law, Ernst Shroeder, her parents (Isaak & Katharina Dueck); parents-in-law (Heinrich & Sara Unrau); and many of her siblings and siblings-in-law.

Katharina will be deeply missed by her husband Heinrich Unrau, her children Anna Unrau, Tina Kehler (Ben), Abram Unrau (Maria), Rudy Unrau (Helen), Jake Unrau (Hilda), Liese Wiebe (Abe), Lili Giesbrecht (Daniel), and son-in-law Peter Giesbrecht (Herta), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, siblings, and many others.

Katharina was born on March 30, 1938, in Kol. Menno, Chaco, Paraguay, to Isaak and Katharina Dueck. She was baptized on June 12, 1954, at the Mennonite Gemeinde, Kol Menno, Chaco, Paraguay, and married Heinrich Unrau on August 14, 1955, in Chaco, Paraguay.

Katharina was a very hard worker, and growing up on a farm in Paraguay was a sure way to have many adventures as well. As the oldest child in her family, she helped with chores around the farm such as milking and searching for livestock in the fields, often requiring courage to wander into the woods where there were dangerous animals like the puma and various poisonous snakes. She also helped around the house with making meals, washing clothes, and other household chores, especially after her Mother passed away when Katharina was 16 years old, which left her the woman of the house to look after younger siblings.

After getting married, she took care of her household and worked and managed the various farms that they had at several locations in Paraguay. On October 25, 1981, Heinrich and Katharina immigrated to Canada, making the Hanover area their home for most of the years in Canada.

Katharina loved the Lord Jesus, and her Family was an integral part of her life. She treasured every moment with them. Going to Church and fellowship with other believers was a foundation in her life, and she prayed for her family. She also enjoyed camping (after they experienced it and realized how much fun it was), singing, music, puzzles, and eating fruit.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 10 am, at Crossings Funeral Care, 12E-40 North Gate Drive, Steinbach, Manitoba. Viewing will take place before the funeral service at 9 am.

Interment will take place after the reception at Heritage Cemetery, 395 Loewen Blvd, in Steinbach, Manitoba.
