Obituary

Agatha Smith nee Goertzen, age 97, of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Resthaven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.

Agatha was born on November 29, 1928, in Chortitz, Manitoba to Johann & Helena Goertzen. As a young adult, she met and married Gordon Smith. They made their family home in the Newmarket, ON area. She is survived by her son Harvey, daughter-in-law Sue and grandchildren Crystal, Ray and Brenda.

She was predeceased by her son Garth, son Bruce and daughter Patricia. Agatha was predeceased by her parents and all her siblings.

Agatha enjoyed a career as a nurse and took pride in her work. In her retirement, she moved to Steinbach and enjoyed spending time with her siblings. She volunteered at the hospital gift shop and at the Self Help store. She knit many pairs of socks for Community Outreach, which were always appreciated. Her hobbies included knitting and puzzling, and she enjoyed going on road trips and going out to eat. Agatha appreciated the care she received at Cedarwood and Resthaven in her last years. As the last surviving aunt these last years, Agatha took the place of our parents so she will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 11:00a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB to follow the reception.
