Obituary

At 1 century, 1 year, 1 month & 1 day-old (101 years-old) Margarete (Wendt) Dolberg passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Villa Youville, Ste. Anne, MB. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years Friedrich Franz Dolberg, her son Fred Dolberg, family and friends. Margarete is survived by loved ones, nearly all who called her Oma, including children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her extended family, relatives, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Margarete was born on June 24, 1925 in Lübberstorf, Germany. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Waldhotel, a destination resort in the countryside near Neukloster, Mecklenburg. Here, Margarete and her sister, Krista, enjoyed playing in the valley and stream called “Klaasbach tal.” At the Waldhotel family business, Margarete most appreciated leading the charge in the hotel’s garden.

Margarete married Friedrich of Pinnohof, Germany on May 25, 1951. In 1961, with their three young children, Margarete and Fritz immigrated to Canada by ship and train to work as farm labourers near Portage La Prairie, MB. In 1968 they purchased a dairy farm in Richer, MB, where they farmed until 1995.

In 1995 Margarete (Oma) and Fritz (Opa) retired to a home in the jack-pine forest in Marchand, MB. With Opa by her side, Oma spent the first years of retirement gardening, traveling, swimming, berry picking, feeding birds, and reading books. Oma enjoyed hosting and took pride in her cooking, baking, and coffee. Oma and Opa enjoyed dancing, especially waltzes, into their seventies. At their 50th wedding anniversary they hired a polka band for all to enjoy. Opa passed away by her side at the age of 79 years. Until the age of 98, Margarete passionately grew a highly productive vegetable garden, sharing with family, neighbours and friends.

In 2023, Margarete moved to the Villa Youville in Ste. Anne. While at the Villa, Oma met new friends, listened to music, admired the large old trees in the park, enjoyed ice-cream on a hot summer day, and even danced one… last… waltz. Oma will be fondly remembered for her stories, delightful character, caring nature, wit and humour. Margarete’s daughter, Regina Konge and family would like to thank the staff at Villa Youville for taking such good care of Oma in her final years.

A private family service will take place at a later date.
