Fatema Hosseini, age 41, of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.
Our mother, Fatema Hosseini, was born in rural Afghanistan. Because of unrest in Afghanistan, she along with her family, fled to Iran when she was a young girl. Our mother had a very difficult life after she got married and finally fled to Türkiye with the two of us, AliReza and Kosar, in 2016.
In Türkiye, we met an Iranian family who introduced us to the Christian faith and a Persian church. As a family we believed in Christ. Mother was baptized in the Iranian church in Ankara, Türkiye. Mother worked hard in Türkiye to provide for all of us and so we could attend school. Life turned more difficult when Mom became ill with a lung disease. During one of her check-ups, the doctors found a tumor in her body. Thus began her battle with cancer.
Mother worried deeply about us, her children – what would happen to us after her death, as we had only our mother. When we were introduced to the refugee sponsorship program in Canada, Mother saw this as the biggest miracle for us!
We arrived in Canada in August 2023 (almost three years ago) and settled in Steinbach, making Ridgewood our home church. We also connected with the Afghan Christian community here in Manitoba and have developed many friendships with Afghans and others in Manitoba.
Sadly, Mom’s struggle with cancer continued. She made many trips to Winnipeg to visit specialists and undergo radiation and chemo treatments – along with many visits to the ER in Bethesda. Mother fought for life. She was desperate to live and walk alongside us and friends. She deeply enjoyed flower gardens and loved walking through greenhouses. She enjoyed day picnics with the Afghan Christian community, even now in July.
On Friday, July 24th mother experienced severe pain and seizures. She was immediately hospitalized where she continued to fight for life. Mom breathed her last and passed away into the presence of our Lord on Wednesday morning, August 4, 2026.
We, AliReza and Kosar, are deeply grateful for all the love and support we have received from so many dear friends, especially the nurses, who have stood with our mother and with us during these three years. God bless each one of you.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Ridgewood Church, 37015 MB-311 Giroux, Manitoba. Interment to follow at Ridgewood Church Cemetery.
