Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Istvan (Steve) Jozsef Faskerti on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the age of 71, at his home in Sprague.

Steve’s memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 50 years, Grace; his son Edward (Lindsay); and his daughter Christine (Donald) Brindle. He was a proud grandfather to Sebastien, Aiden (Annie), Kari (Zackary), Kylie (Quinten), Alivia, Witney, Evan (Kari), and Brody. He is also survived by his brothers, sister, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, numerous extended family members, and many dear friends.

Steve was predeceased by his parents, Istvan (Steve) and Emma Faskerti, and his parents-in-law, Steve and Sophie Mydaniuk.

Born in Veszprém, Hungary, to Steve and Emma (Kovacs) Faskerti, Steve was the oldest of four children. At the age of two, he and his family escaped the Hungarian Revolution and immigrated to Canada. They first settled in Winnipeg before eventually making their home in Sprague.

After completing his education, Steve moved to Winnipeg for work. In 1975, he met the love of his life, Grace, and they were married on June 5, 1976. They lived in Winnipeg until September 1978, when they returned to Sprague to raise their two children.

Steve dedicated 46 years of service to Manitoba Conservation, retiring in June 2024. He was known for his strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to the outdoors.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Steve found great joy in spending time outdoors. Above all else, he loved his family. His grandchildren meant the world to him, and he would proudly speak of their accomplishments to anyone who would listen. They were truly his greatest joy.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the RCMP, Sprague Fire Department, and paramedics for their assistance. Special thanks are also extended to neighbors Jon and Jessica for their kindness, support, and help during this difficult time.
