Obituary

David Paul Neufeld passed away peacefully at the age of 69, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, following complications from a stroke at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He is survived by his loving wife Lori, his four sons David (Jennifer), William, James, and Luke (Jessica), his grandchildren Taya and Evan, as well as his five brothers, two sisters, and their families.

Dave was born in Steinbach on March 8, 1957, to Peter and Anne Neufeld, growing up on the family farm near Tourond, Manitoba. From a young age, he and his siblings were involved in the day-to-day farm work, such as feeding chickens, tilling the fields, and hopping on the riding mower to cut the grass – a pastime that Dave never outgrew.

Dave attended school in the Niverville area before receiving his carpentry certification from Red River College. After spending several years working for Corny Leoppky, Dave started his own company, Neufeld Construction, which was later renamed River Valley Construction. Later in life, Dave built Whitetail Meadow, standing proudly at the corner of the roads 311 and St. Mary’s as his magnum opus.

When he wasn’t actively working on one of his many building or mechanical projects, Dave’s time was often spent immersed in the study of history, particularly the history and heritage of the Mennonite people. He also had a deep appreciation for the natural world, loving all of God’s creatures, great and small. Despite his tireless work ethic and relentless pace, he never failed to pause and admire a robin’s nest or watch a family of deer make their way across the backyard.

Dave always made time for his family, whether it was climbing into the minivan with them for a cross-country road trip or travelling across the world with his wife to marvel at the historical sites he had spent so much time reading about. As hard as he worked to put food on the table for his family, he worked even harder to provide them with treasured memories.

Whether it was a motorcycle trip across the continent or staying at home making his famous meat buns, Dave was a true renaissance man with a wide range of interests. His love for life was driven by a curiosity that was not easily satisfied. It was not enough to know that things worked. Dave needed to know how they worked, why they worked, and – most importantly – how to fix them when they broke.

This made Dave quite a popular fixture in Niverville and the surrounding area. He was a man with a plan and a method. When an engine sputtered, Dave brought it back to life. When a car was trapped in the snow, Dave was never far behind – a guardian angel, tow cable in hand. Dave lived to serve others; to be someone they could depend on when things needed to be set right. For those who knew him, he was exactly that.

In a final act of service to others, Dave’s kidneys were successfully transplanted into two grateful recipients just hours after his passing. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who were touched by his love and generosity of spirit.

The memorial service will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Grant Church, 877 Wilkes Ave, Winnipeg, MB.
