Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mavis Ruth Hyde, who was born on August 30, 1937, and peacefully went home to be with her Saviour on September 7, 2026.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carl Johnson and Bertha (Sjoberg), and her infant brother Melvin, (1934).

She is survived by her children Colin and Cameron (Donna), two grandchildren Christine (Aaron) and Kerry (Ashly), four great grandchildren Micah, Jackson, Maddyn, and Emersyn. She is also survived by her sister Vera Challborn of Alberta.

Mavis was born in Minnedosa and raised near Otter Lake, Manitoba, where she spent her childhood growing up on a farm. She shared memories of growing up during a period where she traveled to school in horse-drawn, enclosed carriage with a wood stove inside to keep warm. She grew up on a mixed farm, helping with the daily work and watching her father raise foxes for their fur.

In 1955, Mavis moved to Winnipeg and completed a 3-year Registered Nursing training at the St. Boniface School of Nurses. In 1958 she completed her training and worked as a general duty nurse at Steinbach until 1961. During her final year she found her place and passion working in the operating room.

While Mavis was in nursing training, her close friend and fellow nursing student Eleanor introduced her to her brother, Frank. The couple enjoyed a long courtship, and Mavis made many trips to Winnipeg to visit Frank.

On June 30, 1962, Mavis and Frank were married and were blessed with two sons, Colin and Cameron. In 1967 Mavis took an extended leave from nursing for the most honorable and difficult profession, a stay-at-home mom. Mavis enjoyed spending time with her boys, loved cooking, baking, gardening with Frank, and serving others in various ways.

Mavis faithfully attended Kirkfield Park Baptist Church for many years, where she served in a variety of roles, including a Sunday School teacher, helping cook and bake for various events, providing meals for those in need, occasionally played the piano, and served faithfully on a prayer chain, answering her phone around the clock to pray for people in crisis.

In 1981 Mavis completed a nursing refresher course and worked at the Grace General Hospital and finished her 20+ year career at The Health Science Center as a circulating operating room nurse. Mavis shared some experiences in the operating room during family dinners and on occasion would ask someone to, “Please pass the scalpel.”

Mavis retired in 1994 and she and Frank were able to travel in their motorhome across Canada and the USA. The couple had some memorable trips to visit family in Sweden, visit the Holy Land in Israel, and Germany and Spain.

Frank and Mavis attended Calvary Temple for many years and Faith Bible Church until declining health prevented them from attending in person. One of Mavis’s favourite scriptures was 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

In the spring of 2024, Mavis experienced significant health challenges and became a resident of Calvary Place Personal Care Home. Frank faithfully visited her at every opportunity until his own health declined and he too became a resident of Calvary Place. Frank and Mavis spent two and a half months together until Frank passed away. Mavis struggled with Frank’s passing and almost 6 weeks later she passed away peacefully and entered into the arms of her Lord and Saviour.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, health care aides, and staff at Calvary Place Personal Care Home for their compassionate care, kindness, and support shown to both Frank and Mavis.

While Mavis will be deeply missed, her family rejoices in the assurance that she is now with her Saviour, once again reunited with Frank and loved ones who have gone before her, and walking by sight in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served.

On Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM a graveside service and interment will be held at the Scandinavia cemetery, near Erickson, MB.
