Obituary

Aganetha (Blatz Kehler) Peters was born 96 years ago, to Peter S. and Katharina Kehler, at Blumengard, Manitoba. Most of her childhood and adolescence were spent on the family farm, in the Twin Creek area north of Mitchell, Manitoba.

As a young adult, she ventured to St. Catherines. Ontario, to work in a cannery for several seasons, and then back to Steinbach and St. Pierre for sewing factory jobs.

Aganetha (Nettie) confessed her Christian faith and was baptized at Randolph in 1951. She lived out her beliefs, according to the Word of God, while raising her family and throughout life.

On October 3,1954, 72 years ago today, Nettie married Cornelius G. Peters. They shared life together in New Bothwell (1954-61), Moray (1962-92), and Steinbach (since 1992). She capably supported Cornelius with family and farm life, as well as responsibilities in the community and church – especially in the pastoral ministry to which they were called in 1971.

After Cornelius’s passing in 2008, Nettie grieved hard and long, and welcomed the support of her family through this difficult time. She then eventually moved from Brooklyn Terrace to Fernwood Place, where she resided until 2023.

Although Nettie enjoyed good health for many years, she experienced a fall and was admitted to hospital, then paneled for personal care. She spent about nine months in St. Pierre Hospital, awaiting transfer to Rest Haven Nursing Home, to reside there long-term.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, Nettie passed away at 2:47pm, after suffering a massive stroke on Monday, September 21. Her last five days left her unresponsive, with labored breathing. Family lovingly surrounded her during this time.

Nettie is predeceased by: her husband Rev. Cornelius G. Peters; her parents, Rev. Peter S. and Katharina Kehler; granddaughters, Rebecca Peters and Tanya Peters Sayer; brothers, Andrew, Henry, Peter, Willy and Jacob; and sisters, Mary Isaac, Helen Unger and Eva Schellenberg.

She is survived by: four sons and two daughters, Pete & Joanne; Dan & Ev; Ed & Barbara; Tom & Mary; Kathy & Ed Friesen; and Martha & Vik Sawatzky; 20 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Nettie is also survived by: three sisters, Anne Doerksen, Tina Bergen, and Frieda (Ed) Neufeld; and three sisters-in-law, Mathilda Kehler, Helen Kehler and Anne Funk, as well as brother-in-law, Aron Friesen.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba.
