Following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Kenneth Mike Huzel (Kenny), of Hadashville, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Heritage Life Personal Care Home in Niverville.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 58 years Maureen Huzel; his children Christine Green and husband Brent, Michael Huzel and wife Edyta and Greg Huzel and wife Chandra; grandchildren (all of whom he was very proud of) Brooklyn Slymkevich, Ryan (Jayla) Miner-Green and Kylie Green; Andrew, Mathew and Mishia Huzel and Carter and Quinn Huzel; great-grandchildren Lennon and Sutton Miner-Green; sister Rozina (Mark) Smith and several brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Bernice and Michael Huzel; brother Lawrence and Lawrence’s wife Joanne Huzel.
Kenny was born on July 4, 1942, in Hadashville. When Kenny was 25, he met the love of his life, Maureen, after she came to live with her sister in nearby Prawda, Manitoba. They were married on October 19, 1968, and lived their life together in Hadashville until a few years ago when Kenny could no longer be at home due to Alzheimer’s disease. Early in the marriage they had their first child Christine who quickly became Daddy’s little girl.
As a young man Kenny worked for the City of Winnipeg for 24 years as a train conductor, then went up north to work for Mid-West Drilling for 5 years and finished his formal working career as a foreman with the Greater Winnipeg Water District for 19 years and was stationed out of Hadashville. Although Kenny enjoyed these occupations, his true passion was his lifelong work in the bush. As a child he worked for his father’s logging business and later took over his quota, cutting spruce for the pulp and paper mills, and developed a firewood business (“The Wood Guy”). He was especially proud to help his son Michael with his own logging business and that his grandson Andrew is continuing the firewood business.
Kenny’s favourite saying was, “When you love what you do, it’s never a day of work”. He loved working in the bush or cutting firewood as he did a lot of that. In the morning he would cut firewood for an hour before going to work at the Greater Winnipeg Water District. Then after coming home and having dinner he would spend a few more hours cutting firewood on his wood processor. Despite being known for his extremely hard work ethic Kenny enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The only time that he would voluntarily shut down the wood processor was when his kids or grandchildren would stop in for a visit. He would come into the house, bringing sawdust with him into the kitchen, and sit down for a drink and conversation with his family. Kenny also enjoyed watching sports and spent a lot of time with his son Greg, hogging the TV and watching Toronto Blue Jays games back in the World Series years and Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night.
The family wishes to give a special thank you to the staff at the Heritage Life Personal Care Home who took great care of Kenny for two and a half years.
The celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba.
