Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Anne Chubaty, after a courageous battle with dementia. Anne was born on November 6, 1926 in Pansy, MB, and passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Holy Family Nursing Home in Winnipeg, MB.

Anne was predeceased by: her husband Peter; parents Mary and Peter; her brothers Maurice, Harry, Nick; and sisters Helen and Lena; brother-in-law Mike; sister-in-law Olga and son-in-law Steve.

She is survived by her children Alice and Nestor (Marian); grandchildren: Jeremy, Melanie and Larysa; her sisters: Mary (Sam), Pauline (Peter), and Doris (Maurice); sister-in-law Louise and brother-in-law Bill, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Anne grew up in Pansy and being the oldest of two brothers and five sisters, she took care of them by cooking meals, milking cows, and anything else that had to be done. In 1943, she worked for John and Anne Paley at the Rosa Country Store, where she met her husband Peter and then settled on a farm in Rosa. Besides being a jack-of -all-trades on the farm, Anne sent out catechism by corresponding and marked their papers from 1966-1977. She took typing by correspondence for one year, took grades 9-12 Ukrainian by correspondence, and in 1992 she wrote five exams at the Steinbach Regional High School and received her grade 12 equivalent certificate in General Education Development.

She was a sestritsya at the Rosa Holy Eucharist Church since 1963 and president of the Rosa Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for over eighteen years. Her biggest project was writing the 25th anniversary book of Rosa’s Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League from 1963-1988. She was very active in her Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Rosa, donating generously to the church, buying an incensor, candles, embroidering a linen altar cloth, Christmas caroling for the church, and volunteering her time and money in up-keeping the church residence and numerous charitable organizations. She helped with many fundraisers, Women’s League teas and conferences. From her wheat field, she also made little sheaves of wheat for the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, St. Michael’s, and Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg.

Prayers will be held on Monday, October 16, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rosa, MB, with interment at the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Anne may be made to the Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery Fund, the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League or a charity of one’s choice.

We would like to thank all the doctors, nurses, volunteers and health care personnel who looked after our mother at the Holy Family Nursing Home.
