Obituary

Eva Plett, age 78 of Steinbach, MB passed away peacefully on July 28, 2022, at her residence.

She is survived by one daughter Pamela (Oscar) Reimer and their children Zachary, Benjamin, Lillian and Melina; four sons Andrew Plett, Lionel (Alfreda) Plett, Myron (Heather) Plett and their children Owen and Makayla, Cameron (Pam) Plett and their children Sawyer, Logan and Dillon; and son-in-law Peter Martens, and Peter and Gwen’s children and grandchildren; Dale (Alicia) Martens and their children Gabriel, Aurora, Thatcher, Nathanial, Rhett and Alaric; Dustin (Amy) Martens and their children Hannah, Winston and Lennyx; Danielle Martens; Daphne Martens (Scott); Dauna-Lee Martens, Keisha Chief (Aubrey) and their child Kashton; and Clark Harper. She is also survived by one sister, Wilma (Ed) Johnson, two brothers, Bernie (Audrey) Brandt, and Cornie (Hanna) Brandt.

She was predeceased by her husband Jacob Plett, her daughter Gwen Martens and her son Wallace Plett. She was also predeceased by her parents, Isaac and Annie Brandt.

Eva was born on October 3, 1943, in Steinbach. She was baptized in 1959 and Eva married Jacob Plett on September 28, 1963.

Eva was the oldest child of four in her family. She was soft spoken, and a kind and generous older sister to her siblings. Her first job was at age 14 at Manco (Granny’s) with Aunt Tina as her supervisor. Whether working with animals, farm machinery, barn chores, household or parenting tasks, mom committed herself and did not grumble or complain.

Mom joined dad on the farm when they got married a few days before her 20th birthday. They farmed together until they sold the farm due to dad’s health in 1987. Mom enjoyed farming, but it was also hard and stressful. Mom did a variety of jobs outside the home after they moved to Mitchell, which she enjoyed. Mom also helped dad with his exporting business and accompanied him to Paraguay on many occasions. They also worked at fishing lodges during the summers of ’98 and ’99.

Mom and dad moved to Steinbach after dad’s first stroke in 2004. Mom loved working as a cook for Serving Seniors for many years. Mom was also thrilled to have the opportunity to serve in the kitchen at Eagle Lake Bible camp for a few summers after dad passed.

Mom faithfully visited dad at the care home for 8.5 years after his second stroke. With dad in the care home and then after he passed away, mom used that extra time to do more with her children and spend time with the grandchildren. These years were truly her golden years where she loved living. Spending eternity with her family was of utmost importance to her, and she shared about Jesus with her grandchildren.

Mom loved travelling the last five years. She was able to see her cousins in Belize and Mexico, enjoyed her trip to Nigeria for Lionel and Alfreda’s wedding, and she often travelled to BC to visit Myron and Heather as well. Mom loved to grow vegetables and flowers and was always keen on showing them to visitors. Mom also loved to sew and crochet and was able to complete special projects for each of her grandchildren before she passed. Mom took an interest in animals, nature and cultures. Mom was kind, accepting and generous with everybody she met. Mom had many friends from all around the globe which was evident in the many visits she received over the past 5 weeks. Mom was full of life and was often heard saying she wanted to “live another 10 years.” The news of the cancer was very disappointing for her, but she faced her last 5 weeks trusting God, and connecting with family and friends who came to see her.

Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and volunteers that cared for mom. Thank you also to Auntie Diane who loved and diligently cared for mom this past year. Thank you, Andy, for living at moms and taking care of details around the house. Thank you, Andy, for encouraging her and taking her to visit friends and family, and travelling with her. We love and appreciate you!

A come and go viewing will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
