Lorna Dyck (nee Penner) was born in Winkler, Manitoba on June 3, 1943. Mom passed away at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach, MB at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, 2018.
Mom is survived and remembered by her loving husband Clarence Dyck; children: Jeanette (Rick) Tetreault, James (Claire) Dyck, Jonathan (Leah) Dyck, and Jeff Dyck; ten grandchildren: Arielle, Amber and Marc Tetreault, Carson and Mackenna Dyck, Mikayla, Kezia and Lexi Dyck, and Xander and Skye Dyck; four siblings: Irene (Jack) Suderman, Wally (Sylvia) Penner, Vic (Carol) Penner, John (Jackie) Penner and the Goertzen family and extended family of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mom was predeceased by her parents Susie and David Penner and step-father Jake F. Goertzen.
Lorna was the oldest in her family of five. Mom was known as a teacher. At a young age, Mom learned to play the piano and violin. In her teens, she taught herself how to play the organ. She was a gifted church pianist and organist and played at many weddings and funerals.
At the age of 19, on June 3, 1962, Mom married Dad at the Winkler Bergthaler Church. Mom was a devoted wife and mother and a caring and compassionate grandmother. She shared her love of baking, making music, knitting, gardening and camping. She shared recipes for home-made soups and desserts with many. Mom had a green thumb that was the envy of many friends and relatives. For 40 years, Mom influenced many children and adults in piano playing and being a good listener. Toward the end, she was still teaching her grandchildren. She was a friend to friends and strangers alike. Mom worked many seasons at the Steinbach Mennonite Heritage Museum, and for 17 years she worked at Rest Haven Nursing Home, in the laundry department.
We, Lorna’s family, want to thank all of you who visited, who brought flowers, encouraged her, and for the many prayers spoken on our behalf.
We extend a special thanks to Dr. Reimer and the Palliative Care team at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre. They did everything they could to keep Mom calm and comfortable. Thank you to Cancer Care Manitoba for their help in a great time of need. Special thanks to Jack and Irene Suderman and Wally and Sylvia Penner for all the support and help during this difficult time. Deep thanks also to Pastors Kenton Penner, Garry Koop and Darnell Plett for their support and visits.
Part of a poem that Mom posted in her Bible describes her wishes for all of us:
“You can love me most by letting hands touch hands and letting go of children that need to be free. Love does not die, people do.”
