Obituary

In loving memory of Sandra-Lee Gale (Sandy) Black, age 72, who went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was born in Dryden, Ontario, on July 10, 1952, the first daughter of the late Eric and Margaret Sideen.

Sandra grew up in Dryden, Ontario, and was active in the Dryden Full Gospel Church singing, leading the youth group, teaching Sunday School and writing articles for the church newsletter. Following high school graduation in 1970, she attended Full Gospel Bible Institute in Eston, Saskatchewan, where she met David Black. In July of 1973 they were married in Dryden and moved to Calgary, Alberta. Moves to Surrey, B.C., back to Calgary, and Phoenix, Arizona followed, ending in a move to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2002. Sandra faithfully served God as she supported David’s work in the Ministry; first as youth pastors, then in Music Ministry, and as the wife of an ordained Priest in the Charismatic Episcopal Church (CEC). In addition to supporting David’s ministry, Sandra worked in many different companies as an administrative assistant. Some of her favourites were Robert Schuller Ministries in Vancouver, and Operation Eyesight in Calgary. In Phoenix, Sandra worked as a business analyst at Cigna Health. When they moved to Winnipeg, her experience as a business analyst led her to Great-West Life where she worked for 10 years, retiring in 2012.

Her most cherished positions, though, were being a mother to Colin and a grandmother to Braden and Bella.

Sandra’s light shone in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her faith in God never wavered; she trusted Him with her entire being. Her illness was just part of God’s plan for her life and she knew that whatever the outcome would be, He would take care of her. She remained happy and positive, full of compassion and grace. Her smile never faded until she took her final breath, and it will be remembered by all who knew her.

Sandra was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, David Black, and her parents Eric and Margaret Sideen.

Sandra is survived by her son Colin Black, his wife Ashley, grandson Braden, and granddaughter Bella, of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters Pat (Jim) Freiburger, Janie (Bill) Hohn and Lori Sideen; aunts Sarah Auren and Sheryn Gummer; nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 1:00 pm, at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach, Manitoba.

The family would like to thank the staff at Actionmarguerite St. Joseph Personal Care Home, and Deer Lodge Centre, Lodge 6 West for caring for Sandra over the past year.
