Obituary

Eva Funk, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the age of 96.

Eva was born April 21, 1929, near Steinbach, Manitoba. She lived a life full of kindness, care and beauty. She had a gentle spirit and nurturing heart, qualities that showed in the gardens she tended and the birds she loved to watch. Her home was always surrounded by blooming flowers, and she found joy in every season.

Eva’s mother and father were not church going parents and Ben and Eva were not Christians when they got married. While they were working at their new home on Hanover Street mom noticed people driving to church on Sunday mornings. One particular autumn day through a conversation with her sister she accepted Christ as her savior with Ben following in the same faith on Christmas Eve. They started attending the Bergthaler church which became a vibrant community for them. They were both baptized June 2, 1957, and I quote from mom “It has not always been easy following God and I have failed him many times, but God has always lifted us up and carried us on.” She was a member of the Christian Fellowship Church in Steinbach until the end.

Eva had a love of the outdoors, fishing, family walks in Sandilands, and watching the geese at Oak Hammock Marsh. Her adventurous spirit led her to discover new landscapes and cultures travelling to Paraguay, Alaska, Montana, Alabama, Salt Lake City, Florida, and parts of Western and Eastern Canada. She travelled by planes, trains and automobiles. Some of her favorite vacations were on her multiple cruises with her sister, sister in-law and good friend Jessie.

Among her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren who were the light of her days. She loved creating memories that will be treasured forever.

Beyond her love of the outdoors, Eva will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and the way she made everyone feel welcome. She had a gift for creating a sense of peace and comfort, whether it was through a home cooked meal, a conversation or walking through her flower gardens. Mom was an amazing cook, known for her homemade soups, perogies, her saskatoon turn-overs, and her baking. Her other passion was making many wool quilts and blankets, carding her own wool on the carding machine made by Dad.

Mom eventually moved into her final home at Rest Haven Care Home in February 2021. Eva passed peacefully at the end and went home to be with her Lord and Savior and was finally reunited with Ben.

She is survived by her children; Judy, Brian (Valerie), (Roberta), Debbie (Ken), (John), Joyce (Patrick), and Dan (Bobbie-Joe);

Grandchildren; Krista, Kathryn, Karla (Steve), Michael (Megan), Scott (Emily), Laura, Nicole, Trevor, Anthony, Kim (Frank), Matt, Chris, Jeremy, Jason, Logan and Jordan.

Great-grandchildren; Kayden, Hazel, Ella, Dillyn, Inara, Kali, Miranda, Lyn, Everleigh, Easton, Anya and Katarina.

She is also survived by her sister, Elma, sisters-in-law Hilda, Mary and Joy, her brother-in-law Harry, as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Eva was predeceased by her husband Ben, son Ken, daughter Becky and daughter-in-law Betty Anne and her parents Jacob and Anna Fehr as well as many of her siblings.

We as the family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Rest Haven Care Home for their friendship and compassionate care of our mother.

The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
