Obituary

Richard (Rick) William Boitson, beloved son of Gladys Boitson and Walter Boitson, was born on March 8, 1972, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From the age of 11, he made his home in the Portage la Prairie area, where he lived and worked for most of his life. Nevertheless, Rick’s life was marked by many challenges, and sadly, after a long struggle with mental health, his life tragically ended by suicide on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the age of 53.

He will be remembered for his sharp laugh, laid-back nature, and deep love of the outdoors. Whether fishing, hunting, riding anything with fewer than four wheels, or operating heavy machinery – a skill he took great pride in – Rick found joy and freedom in nature. He was also an excellent cook, known for his smoked meats, homemade sausages, and jerky – all prepared with care and skill.

Rick is survived by his parents, Gladys (Giesbrecht) Boitson and Walter Boitson; his siblings Larry (Darlene) Boitson, Carol (Darren) Neubauer, Gordon Boitson, Angela (Jonathan) Funk, and Jeffrey Boitson; as well as his nieces and nephews, who will cherish his memory. Rick will also be deeply missed by many friends who knew and loved him. He was predeceased by his birth mother, Alice Boitson, his grandparents, and numerous aunts and uncles.

The memorial service will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Southland Church in Steinbach, Manitoba.
