Obituary

Linda Dueck (nee Hiebert), passed away peacefully, at 87 years of age, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, MB.

Linda was born May 26, 1938, to Diedrich A. and Katharina (Penner) Hiebert in New Bothwell, the second of three children. After Katharina died, Diedrich and Susanna Hiebert had another seven children, the rest of Linda’s sisters and brothers. She married our dad John Dueck on September 15, 1957. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

She is survived by her three children Carol Bergen, Sharon Mendenhall, and Conrad Dueck, and their families. She is also survived by her siblings Margaret, Nettie, Anne, Martin, Peter, Mary, and Kathy, and by many members of the extended family.

Linda was predeceased by her husband John by one day; by her parents, and by her brothers Dick Hiebert and John Hiebert. She was also predeceased by her nephew Brian Hiebert, nephew Rodney Buhler, and brother-in-law Alex Jones.

Our mother’s life had many physical challenges, including being born with a hole in her heart, and having rheumatic fever at a young age. She underwent one of the first open- heart surgeries in Manitoba in the 1960s. In some ways these challenges defined her life, but in spite of this she always worked hard.

As a girl she worked on the farm, hoeing sugar beets and stooking grain. Her domestic abilities started showing early – she often talked of playing house with her sisters, each stationed at hydro poles along the road. She had the responsibility of baking for the family from a young age and helped take care of her younger siblings.

She took pride in her home. Presentation was always important to her, and she loved to set a beautiful table for special dinners that she cooked for family and friends. She always had pans of cinnamon buns in the freezer, ready to warm up for guests. She could sew anything, from diapers to bridesmaid dresses. She even sewed curtains for Morrow Gospel Church.

She was a committed volunteer – hosting missionaries, baking and cooking for church and conference functions, teaching children’s Sunday school, and volunteering in the church on Thursdays.

In her later years she loved recycling greeting cards, remaking them for all occasions. She took every opportunity to use colourful stickers in cards and on envelopes.

Mom and Dad moved to Lindenwood Manor in 2019. Mom continued to live there after Dad was moved to Tuxedo Villa in 2023, where she continued to visit him faithfully until he died on November 4th. Dad’s passing broke her heart. She died the following day at the Grace Hospital.

The joint funeral service for Linda Dueck and her husband John will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at Morrow Gospel Church, Winnipeg, MB., with viewing prior to the service, starting at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow the service.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lindenwood Manor for their kind and compassionate care over the years that Linda spent there.
