John Douglas Cormie went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 87.
Born April 1, 1938, in Moncton, New Brunswick, to James Cormie and Annie (née Wadman), Doug grew up enjoying the freedom of the 1940s – playing hockey, gathering friends, and charming everyone with his quick wit.
He was predeceased by his parents; his beloved first wife of 35 years, Barbara (née Reynolds); his brother Herb; sister-in-law Anne, brother-in-law Manning and two stepsons Danny and Mark.
At just 16, Doug joined the Canadian Armed Forces, where his strong character and magnetic personality served him well. While stationed in Washington, D.C., delivering classified documents, he met and married Barbara, who worked at the Pentagon. Together they raised their three children while moving between Canadian military bases before settling in Halifax in 1978.
In Halifax, Doug worked at Dalhousie University as a Dental Lab Technician then later taught at the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology. There, he also made a deep commitment to his faith and became actively involved in his church community.
After Barbara’s passing from cancer, Doug moved to Winnipeg to be closer to family. In 2001 he married Monique, and they shared 25 wonderful years together in Winnipeg and St. Malo. Doug remained active in church life in Winnipeg and Niverville. Recently moving to Steinbach, he formed meaningful friendships at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre. He also maintained lifelong connections with his Army regiment.
He is lovingly remembered by his precious wife Monique (nee Dubois) ; his children Dan (Kathy), Tracey, and Chris (Leann); his grandchildren Joel (Hannah), Caleb (April), Silas (Emilie), Morgan, Abby (Joseph), Lucas, Canaan, and Azalea; and his great-grandchildren Levi, Eliana, Jordan Douglas, Olive, River, and Daisy. He is also survived by his sister Kathy Jay and nieces and nephews.
“Poppa Doug” loved his family deeply and proclaimed God’s goodness throughout his life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
