Obituary

It is with sadness and love that we say goodbye to Gladwin Penner, our Husband, Father and Grandfather & Great Grandfather who peacefully passed away at Maplewood Manor on Monday morning May 4th, 2026. He reached the age of 97 years and 5 months.

Dad was born to John D. Penner and Katherine Loewen Penner on November 19th, 1928, at Rosenort, Manitoba. He grew up in a large family on his parent’s farm, and attended school in Rosenort Country School. He gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized in November 1943 into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. He stayed true to his vows until the end.

When he was 15 years old his Mother died and his Father remarried. As a young adult he worked with his brothers on his parents farm and in the bush during the winters.

In April 1952 He married Ella Goossen of Rosenort, Mb sharing 74 wonderful years of marriage together. They settled into farming west of Rosenort where their home was blessed with 5 children.

In the beginning, Dad did carpentry work and farmed with his brother Elmer, He also raised hogs. When the boys were bigger, he farmed on his own, together with the boys, and sometimes the girls. We had many enjoyable years doing this together… we got along well.

He was a hardworking man who provided well for his family and was always willing to lend a hand to friends, and neighbors. He felt strongly about helping out his fellow man, and always gave people the benefit of the doubt.

Mom & Dad left the farm for their house in Rosenort in 1999, lived in Heritage apartments awhile, and then moved to the Maplewood Manor.

He is survived by his beloved wife Ella; daughter Cheryl (Gerald Loewen); daughter-in-law Julie, son Barry (Yaryna); son David (Peggy); daughter Barbara (Rodney Peters) 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Brothers; Leonard (Evelyn), Melvin (Elvera) Ken (Darlene) Wayne (Phyllis) Rick (Karen) Darrell (Carolyn) Sisters; Dolores Miller, Janet (James Goossen) sister-in-law Naiomi Penner, brothers-in-law Lee Hiebert (Neoma) Bert Penner (Rosalyn) and Percy Goossen.

He was predeceased by his son Kenton; Father, Mother and Stepmother. 7 brothers, 6 sisters, 3 brothers in-law and 7 sisters-in-law.

We as a family are saddened, but relieved that Dad could go. For the last several years his eyesight, speech and mobility deteriorated, and he often expressed a desire to go Home.

The viewing will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with devotional starting at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Rosenort Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, 30106 PR 422, Rosenort, MB.

We would like to thank the Maplewood Manor staff for their excellent care.
