The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating the RCMP’s use of a less-lethal firearm during the arrest of an adult male in Pine Creek First Nation.
On July 29, 2025, RCMP notified the IIU of an incident that occurred on July 28. According to the notification, Winnipegosis RCMP were called to a mental health complaint in Pine Creek First Nation.
An update was soon after received stating the male involved was with emergency medical services, who were transporting him to Dauphin Hospital and police were no longer required. During transportation, the male began assaulting the paramedics and they called the RCMP. Once on-scene, an officer encountered the male armed with an edged weapon. A use-of-force encounter occurred, which had no effect. The male attempted to enter a passing vehicle, leading to an altercation. Another officer arrived to assist, and two more use-of-force encounters occurred, with the second striking the male on the left side of the abdomen and ribs. After a lengthy struggle, officers were able to handcuff the male and take him into custody. He was transported to Dauphin Hospital, where it was determined he had a broken rib. The male was treated and released into police custody.
In accordance with the Police Services Act and regulations, any injury resulting from the use of a firearm is deemed a serious injury and, as such, mandates an investigation by the IIU.
