Obituary

Edna Reimer (nee Loewen), age 100 years, of Steinbach, MB, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.

Edna was born on February 25, 1919 in Steinbach, MB, to Peter and Anna Loewen. She was the youngest of three children (Ben and Margaret) and was only one year old when her mother died. Her father remarried soon after to his wife’s sister, Margaret, who became the mother and grandmother we all knew.

Edna has been predeceased by her loving husband of 69 years, Bill Reimer and her siblings Ben, Margaret, George, Herman, Katherine and her grandson Myron. She leaves behind two sisters, Anne and Eileen.

She also leaves behind her children, Gerald (Mavis), Carol Anne (Steve), Marilyn (Peter), Billy (Carey) and Eleanor and 11 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Although Edna was only able to complete her grade nine education, she continued to welcome opportunities to further her skills by enrolling in dress making school in Winnipeg. She also completed one year of bible school in Steinbach.

She married Bill in 1940 and their first child Gerald was born in 1941. After his birth they moved to Roblin, Manitoba where Dad had a trucking job for one year. They then moved back to Steinbach where Dad built their first house on Mill Street. She spent the rest of her life in Steinbach where she raised her five children, supported her husband during his many years working at CT Loewen and Sons. She was also very active in Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church where they were charter members.

Our home was always open to family, friends and visiting missionaries. Cooking was not her first love, but she was an amazing baker. Her bread and buns every Saturday were legendary. She used her sewing talent to sew many of our clothes and in later years she took up needlepoint, knitting and quilting. She passed on her love of travel to us and we have many fond memories of camping trips to the west coast to visit family. After Dad’s retirement they traveled to Europe, Ethiopia and the Philippines to visit us and care for grandchildren. In her later years she looked forward to summers at the cottage. When she gave up sewing, she excelled at solving cryptograms and completing puzzles.

Our family was so privileged to celebrate her 100th birthday just four weeks prior to her death.

Our mom has finished the race and we know that she is now celebrating with her heavenly Father.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 1, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior to the service.

Interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
