Obituary

(Lloyd) George Hodgins, 98, of Niverville, MB., passed away surrounded by family at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB., on Saturday, September 14, 2019.

George is survived by son Vern Hodgins and his wife Linda of Prince Albert, SK.; daughter Ellen Byggdin and her husband Brent of Niverville, MB; son Bruce Hodgins of Muenster, SK.; daughter-in-law Doris Hodgins of Regina, SK.; brother Ernie Mills Hodgins of Vancouver, B.C.; nine grandchildren (Dana, Mitch, Kami, Keegan, Mary, Abby, Jordan, Keanan, and Justin); and two great-grandchildren (Eli and Layla).

George was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Eleanor Hodgins (McKay); his son Wes Hodgins, granddaughter Marina Byggdin, and five siblings.

The fourth of seven children born to Lloyd and Sarah Hodgins, George was born in 1920 near Vandura, SK., on the family farm near Fairmede.

He attended Fairmede School through Grade 10 and continued his agricultural education on the farm. He grew up working in the fields, stooking and threshing, and caring for livestock. He had a special love for horses and enjoyed driving teams and riding. He was active in the local 4- H grain and calf clubs and attended every Fairmede Agricultural Fair for 80 consecutive years.

In 1950, George caught the eye of an attractive young schoolteacher named Eleanor McKay. They married in October 1950 and raised four children. George’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy.

George and Eleanor farmed Fair Acre Farm for over 40 years before retiring to an acreage in Kennedy, SK. in 1991, where George kept busy in his shop and about town. He liked playing cards and crokinole, but his favorite game was cribbage. George also loved old time dances and fiddle music. He was known for his humble demeanor and servant heart.

In December 2014, George and Eleanor moved to NCU Manor in Niverville.

The family thanks the staff of NCU Manor, Bethesda Regional Health Centre, and De Salaberry District Health Centre for providing excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Terry Fox Foundation and the Fairmede Church Restoration Fund, Box 440, Wawota SK. S0G 5A0.

A memorial service was held Sept. 22, 2019, at Niverville Heritage Centre. Ash interment to follow at Fairmede, SK. at a later date.
