Obituary

On Friday, October 11, 2019, Larry John Friesen passed away at the age of 71 years old, at De Salaberry District Health Centre, St. Pierre, MB.

Larry leaves behind his children Carole (Danny) Penner, Brigette (Michael) Fustey, Derrick (Joanne) Friesen. He also leaves behind his 13 grandchildren, Kyle (Erin) Penner, Devin (Danielle) Penner, Matthew (Michelle) Penner, Andrea Penner, Courtney Fustey, Kolton Fustey, Ashley Friesen (Justin Funk), Josette Friesen, Myles Friesen (Amber Anderson) as well as 15 great-grandchildren, along with sister and brother-in-law Sylvia and Rudy Warkentin and brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Erna Friesen.

Larry was predeceased by his wife of 49 years; Eveline Friesen in 2017, his parents Henry and Mary Friesen and his in-laws Adelarde and Eleanore Cote.

Dad was born and raised in Grunthal, Manitoba. He married mom on September 9, 1967, together they had 3 children. Dad loved hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. He was a proud Grunthal Red Wing and proud Grunthal General. He loved to watch hockey and even coached hockey. As kids we remember going to many baseball tournaments throughout southern Manitoba with the Grunthal Generals which he really enjoyed. Dad also practiced some chiropractor skills back in the day. We know he was never trained in it but could perform a mean back crack when it was needed.

Mom and Dad retired in St. Malo and enjoyed their years on their “lot” surrounded by mom’s family. After mom passed in 2017, you could see dad driving around St. Malo in either his beloved golf cart or his scooter going to the farmers market every Saturday.

Dad had a massive stroke in 2006, which left him paralyzed on one side and lost his ability to communicate effectively, and he sure used to love to talk. We know you are now talking and walking with mom and take solace in knowing you are no longer suffering.

We would like to thank the wonderful homecare staff at the Chalet in St. Malo for helping us care for dad these last 3 years without mom. We would also like to thank the staff at the De Salaberry District Health Centre, for the care and compassion in dad’s final days. Special thank you to Pastor Rick Neufeld for dropping everything each time dad wanted to pray.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 21, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

Donations in memory of Larry, may be made to De Salaberry District Health Centre Foundation (memo line: Palliative Care), Box 320, St. Pierre-Jolys, MB, R0A 1V0.
