Obituary

In the early hours of the morning on Monday, November 11th, 2019, “Grandpa Ed” who had been suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s embarked on one final walk that would free him from the prison that had kept him long enough.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, daughter Melody (Brett) and their children: Jared, Jolene, Diana, Ruth and Trevor; son Kevin, son Kurt (Denise) and their children: Tyrus (Brittney) and Colter; son Michael (Jen) and their children: Nicole (Jonathan and their daughter Audrey), Lauren, and Hailey; daughter Mary-Ruth Helene (Michael) and their daughter Lucy, and son Matthew.

Ed was predeceased by his parents and brother Dave.

He was born on May 19, 1943 to David and Maria Friesen the eldest of four boys. Ed completed his teaching degree at SBC and was teaching at his first one room school by the age of 19 a career that continued for 51 years.

On October 8, 1967, he married the love of his life who would support him throughout a lifetime of shenanigans. Together the raised a family of 6 children having kids in the home for 46 years.

Ed had a passion for being Santa Claus at Christmas and played the part to the finest detail including having his hair AND beard curled at the salon in the mall which he probably negotiated for free.

At the age of 72 he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s which began to rob him of his memory and eventually his personality. In his final month’s dad was expressing his wish to go home and be free. As a family we are happy for his freedom but will need our time to mourn our loss.

We are so thankful for everyone that supported us on his final day.

The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 19th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Kleefeld Evangelical Mennonite Church, 25121 Rd 35 N, Kleefeld, MB.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Ed may be made to the Alzheimer Society Manitoba, 10 -120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2.
