Obituary

Alice Agatha Wiens (nee Plenert) was born on April 4th, 1931 in Rosthern, Saskatchewan to Henry and Agatha. They moved from Hanley, Saskatchewan to Winnipeg, in 1953.

She was baptized on the confession of her faith in 1950, at the First Mennonite Church. Her faith continued to grow throughout her life.

As a young woman, Mom worked at Reidgers Grocery Store, and then at Pauline Chambers. During that time in 1953, she met the love of her life, John Wiens, at a house party. They were married at the Glenlea Mennonite Church on June 24th, 1955.

Mom and Dad farmed near St. Agathe for 23 years, where they raised their five children. Besides raising children, she loved gardening and tending her flowers. Summers were spent in her garden weeding, watering, and picking vegetables, after which she canned and froze her harvest.

Her faith was the guiding principle in her life, and she was very active in the Glenlea Church. We are sure there are many people who were kept warm with the blankets she helped sew. Her favorite verses were Proverbs 3:5-6.

They moved several times after selling the farm and for the past year and a half Dad and Mom lived in Lindenwood Manor in Winnipeg. Throughout the years they were able to enjoy the weddings of their children, the birth of 10 grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Mom cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and they loved going to grandma and grandpa’s house. To everyone who knew her, she was one of the most selfless people, always thinking of everyone else before herself.

Mom had heart surgery in March of 2014. Despite a lengthy recovery and permanently requiring oxygen, mom continued to maintain her positive attitude and her faith kept her spirit strong. We were always amazed by her determination. She was small but mighty!

Mom was an inspiration to us all and we were blessed to be her family. She will be forever missed by all of us.

Mom is survived by: her husband John, and children: Linda (Michael Arnaud), Marilyn (Glenn Friesen), Donald (Lynette), Dorothy (Don Tkachyk), and Johnny (Jenn), 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, two sisters: Melita (Don Higgins) and Helen (Allen Pickering), and one brother Ted.

Mom was predeceased by her father and mother Henry and Agatha Plenert.

On earth we mourn an angel, but the heavens rejoice at her homecoming.

The funeral service for Alice will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Glenlea Mennonite Church, Glenlea, MB, with a viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at the church cemetery.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Alice may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5K9.
