Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Vaughn Friesen on Saturday, July 11th, at the age of 23. Vaughn was born on November 4th, 1996 and raised in Steinbach, Manitoba.

Vaughn is survived by his mother Joelah Friesen, his sister Lauren and brother Iain. He was predeceased by his father Lavern Friesen.

Vaughn had a contagious smile that many worked tirelessly to expose. His sense of humour was unique, his laughter was the sound of pure joy and was more than enough reward for the hard work of those around him.

Vaughn loved creating. His favourite activities were building Lego sets and gingerbread houses, finger painting, woodburning artwork and handcrafting woodwork. He did all of these activities hand-over-hand with family and friends and this was always a welcomed time of bonding. His focus on the activity at hand was a clear marker of his interest. He was always proud of his work.

Having a role was important to Vaughn. Delivering piles of folded laundry on his lap to different rooms was a hit. Listening for the dishwasher cycle to complete and vocally telling his family when it was done was a responsibility he took on eagerly. Waiting for and greeting expected guests at the entrance door, shredding paper, and mixing cookie ingredients were jobs he loved. Every week he looked forward to washing toys at a local daycare.

Vaughn had a way of uniting people around him. His support group was large and the group he influenced even larger. Communication wasn’t easy for Vaughn, but if he yelled at and pinched you, rest assured you were ‘in’ and a certain level of trust had been gained. He taught us that communication is so much more than words, and that enough can be said through our eyes and a smile.

The family would like to thank all those who were a part of Vaughn’s village. To all who loved and cared for him with open hearts and minds, you helped make Vaughn’s world a better place, and for that we are deeply grateful.

A Celebration of Vaughn’s Life will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, outdoors (weather permitting), on Wednesday, July 22nd at 2:00 pm. Please bring your own lawn chairs. Those that would like to attend are asked to call the SEMC office at 204-326-6572. A video recording of the service will be made available to view online after the service for those that cannot attend.
