She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.

Frieda will be lovingly remembered as an industrious, generous and fun-loving woman who prized home and family above all else.

The memorial service for Frieda Wegert will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St. Winnipeg, MB, with Pastor Bjoern Meinhardt officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 1N9.

Like so many of her generation who were born in Europe in the early twentieth century, Frieda’s life was not easy: the trauma of war, the heartbreak of untimely death, the uncertainty of emigration, the stress of adapting to a foreign language and culture, and all of this in near constant penury.

Frieda arrived with her family at Quebec City in June 1953, grateful to have survived the stormy Atlantic, but not quite prepared for an unending train ride through the trackless forest of the Canadian Shield en route to Winnipeg. The first four years were spent on Victor St. followed by twelve years on Banning and then, in 1969, the move was made to Borebank where she resided until age 93.

Frieda left Germany with a limited education which did not bode well for career options in the new world. The solution: initially sewing leather gloves at home and then decades of cleaning houses. She never found this tedious or demeaning but rather quite enjoyed the company of the people for whom she worked. Given the trials and tribulations that life sent her way, it is understandable that she was always cautious and a bit pessimistic but never allowed this to darken her days.

She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
