Obituary

Leonard Alvin Schultz, known affectionately as Len to his friends and family, was called to his eternal home surrounded by loving family, on August 14, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on January 9, 1936, in Vita, Manitoba, to Henry and Anna Schultz, Len lived a life characterized by dedication to his family, his faith, and the pursuit of knowledge.

A man of deep Christian faith, Len walked through life with a gentle strength and a compassionate heart. He was born into a loving family and was the cherished youngest brother of Edmund, Melvin, and Alice, all of whom preceded him in death. His beloved wife, Alexandra Schultz, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories, passed in 2012.

Len’s educational journey began at Teachers College and continued at the University of Manitoba where he earned a degree in Education. His passion for teaching and craftsmanship led him take courses at the Manitoba Institute of Technology and then to Bemidji, where he obtained an Industrial Arts Certificate. Len taught for over 30 years in various communities across Manitoba, including LaRiviere, Manigotagan, Eddystone, Winnipeg, Emerson, and notably, Dominion City, where he spent the majority of his career. In the 1960s, Len and Sandra went on an adventure and spent three years teaching in Inuvik, NWT.

As an educator, Len was instrumental in introducing Industrial Arts programs to schools, ensuring that hands-on learning and practical skills became a staple of the curriculum. His involvement in his community was equally impactful. He served on numerous committees over the years including the United Church Board, Swimming Pool Committee, and of course the Craft Club, where you could find him daily for many years. Len was also a volunteer firefighter and a member of the Elks.

Len’s personal interests were a reflection of his curious and creative nature. He was an exemplary handyman, always ready to build, repair, or renovate. His hands crafted not just objects, but also a warm and welcoming home for his family. Len found solace in the pages of Science magazines and the adventures within western novels. Country drives were a source of relaxation for him, providing a peaceful escape and a chance to admire the crops and time spent teaching his daughters to drive.

A lifelong learner with a keen eye for design, Len took tremendous pride in his home and yard, often imbued with his unique touch. He was a talented wood worker and many families across southern Manitoba have his craftsmanship on display in their homes.

Len’s love for his family was evident in everything he did. As a family man, he cherished keeping in touch with relatives near and far. Visits from family and friends brought him immense joy, and he would eagerly recount these gatherings during weekly calls with his daughters.

Len’s legacy lives on through his loving family: his daughters Leah-Ann and Lenna, son-in-law Jon, and his adored grandchildren, Nolan and Kaylea, and Spencer and Brianna. Each of them carries a piece of Len’s wisdom, kindness, and spirit within them.

Leonard Alvin Schultz’s journey on earth may have concluded, but his influence and the love he shared will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we remember Len, we celebrate a life well-lived, and a man well-loved.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, August 18th, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dominion City United Church.
