Sarah was born on July 8, 1929, on a farm in Manitoba, into a family of proud immigrants who valued hard work, faith, and community. She often reminded us that she came into the world the same year as the great stock market crash – a reflection of her sharp wit and enduring spirit. That sense of humor stayed with her throughout her life, even in the toughest of times.
On Monday, September 1, 2025, Sarah passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. She devoted her life to nursing, specializing as an operating room nurse. Her dedication, compassion, and strength made her a source of comfort and healing to so many, but to those of us who knew her best, she loved and cared for those around her unconditionally.
Sarah was a woman of deep faith, a proud Christian whose love for God was evident in the way she lived and loved. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family, and she found peace knowing she would be reunited with her beloved husband, John (Jack) Shail, and her cherished daughter, Anne Cudney.
She is survived by her brother Jake Neufeld and sister Jo Nicol, eldest son Richard Shail and youngest daughter Kimberlee (Ken) Proulx and step-daughter Linda Sneddon; including nine grandchildren Jazmyn (Jer) Kalynuik, Zak (Pam) Cudney, Liam (Nicole) Cudney, Chandra (Tony) Juurlink, Kristy Shail, TJ (Shannon) Shail, Kenneth (Jeanette) Proulx, Kevin (Teri) Proulx, Randy (Margo) Proulx and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in each of us – in our stories, our values, and the love she gave so freely.
Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Sarah was better for it. Her kindness, wisdom, and warmth left an undeniable mark on all of our lives. She will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
