Obituary

Darren Lyle Willems, a man known for his faith, and gentle kindness, passed away September 30, 2025 at the age of 57, surrounded by his family at De Salaberry District Health Centre. Born on April 9, 1968, in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, Darren was the youngest son of Vic and Carol Willems and brother to Dale and Terry (Carolyn). He was husband to Val (Loewen), Dad to Justin (Charlotte), Levi (Rebecca) and Kurt (Rachel) and Papa to Hugo, Lily, Noa, Jack and Sadie. His journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to Jesus, his family, church, friends, and students.

Throughout his life, Darren faced challenges with grace and resilience. He served his community by leading worship at church, VBS and Simonhouse Bible Camp and mentoring young musicians to also lead in worship at LSCF Darren’s life was rich with interests that spoke to his adventurous and gentle spirit. He biked and walked where others did not, always with his camera. His photography highlighted the intricate details of the world that many overlook. His love for the outdoors shone through his enjoyment of wood barbecues, backcountry camping, and canoeing on lesser-traveled lakes. He was a creator who made music, built backyard hockey rinks, and baked pizzas in a makeshift outdoor oven, always preferring the scenic route and taking bike rides on dirt country roads or along the river in winter with his beach cruiser. Darren’s musicality extended to playing the accordion, and he savored the simple pleasure of a good cup of coffee and listening to records.

Darren was diagnosed with the aggressive brain cancer glioblastoma multiforme in December 2021. Throughout this journey, which included two brain surgeries and extensive treatments of radiation and chemotherapy, Darren faced his illness with courage, faith, and grace, taking each day as a gift to do what he enjoyed and spend time with the people he loved. He has left an indelible mark on his family and those around him, one that will be cherished and remembered with deep affection. Darren Lyle Willems’ journey on earth has ended, but his praise and worship of Jesus in his real home has just begun.

The family wishes to thank their family and friends for all their love and support; Darren’s cancer care team at Cancer Care Manitoba for the treatment that allowed him more time; and The Grace Hospital and De Salaberry District Health Centre for their care for Darren during his last moments.

The funeral service for Darren Willems will be held at Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, 500 Lagimodiere Blvd, Winnipeg, MB on Saturday, October 11th, 2025 at 2:00 pm.

“I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” ~ Philippians 3:14
