It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, David Hiebert. Dad passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at the age of 95.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Barbara Dueck, Colleen Loewen (George), Mary Jane Hiebert (Wade McMurrich), and Ellen Hiebert (Murray Penner); grandchildren, Michael Dueck (Nina), Ryan Dueck (Megan), Meagan Friesen (Kyle), Kate Loewen, Dillon Loewen (Robyn), and Daegan Penner; great-grandchildren, Madison, Wesley, and Matthew Dueck, Lorelai and Gideon Desrosiers, and Mikayla Loewen; sister Erna (Ben) Thiessen; brother Jacob Hiebert; sisters-in-law Myrtle Hiebert and Sarah Thiessen; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
David was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary (Wiebe) Hiebert, in 2019; his parents, Heinrich Hiebert and Otillie Luzius; brothers Henry, John, William, and Fred; sister Elsie; sons-in-law Dietmar Dueck and Wayne Bell, and three sisters-in-law, Muriel, Hertha and Peggy.
Dad was born in Lowe Farm on October 18, 1929, and grew up in Arnaud, Manitoba, where his father operated a small transportation company. He began driving truck for his father, delivering goods to nearby communities, including Steinbach. It was at a church youth event in Steinbach in 1951 that he met our mother. They were married there on June 15, 1952.
A dedicated and hardworking man, Dad found great satisfaction in his work with Loewen Funeral Chapel, Loewen Chev Olds, and Penner International Ltd., where he logged many miles on the road. After retirement, he enjoyed working with Penn-Lite Electric and volunteering at the Mennonite Heritage Village, where he could often be found mowing the lawns for hours on end.
In his spare time, Dad loved tending to his immaculate yard, woodworking, and golfing. One of his proudest moments came on April 24, 2003, when he scored his only hole-in-one on the 18th hole at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Course.
Dad and Mom moved to Bridgepark Manor in June 2011, where they enjoyed many years socializing and working on puzzles in the library. In September 2024, Dad moved to Rest Haven, where he continued to enjoy socializing and puzzling with new friends.
Our family is deeply grateful to all the caregivers at Rest Haven for their kindness and care over the past year, especially during Dad’s final days. We would also like to express our gratitude to Galina and Sue, who went out of their way to provide compassionate home care while our Dad lived on his own at Bridgepark Manor.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
