At the age of 96, Don Cudney passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Bethesda Place in Steinbach, MB.
Don was a happy man, always chuckling and telling stories. They were usually a little embellished, but they always ended with his signature laugh.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and William Swanson, and his beloved wife, Doreen.
Don is survived by his son Bill; grandchildren Jazmyn (Jared), Zak (Pam), and Liam (Nicole); and seven great-grandchildren: Izzy, Otto, Scottie, Skylar, Layla, Crew, and Sofie.
A jack of all trades, Don dedicated many years to his career as a millwright at Standard Products. While his working years were long his job as a caregiver to his wife when she fell ill was most admirable. Don cared for Doreen, who he joyfully referred to as “Grandma DoeDoe” or “The Old Crow” for over a decade. He would often be remembered pushing her wheelchair, making small jokes, and hearing her respond with “Shut up Don!”. They jabbed each other constantly, but it was always followed by a shared laugh.
Don and Doreen spent many summers hosting their grandchildren for month-long visits in Ontario. Memories of the quirky things Don did will live on through our stories: honking his car horn around the corner and laughing, writing “Donald Duck” on all his belongings, and cooking breakfast sausages for the grandkids in the mornings. Don was a happy man in his prime.
We would like to thank that amazing caregivers at Bethesda Place who cared for our Grandpa in his last years. The kindness of these employees, especially during his palliative days will never be forgotten.
“The skill of being a hospice nurse is answering the call of a patient in their last moments with love and compassion”. Thank you from Don’s Family.
A private celebration of Don’s life will be held.
