Our beloved mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at Altona Hospital on Wednesday, August 19, just shy of her 93rd birthday. Waiting to welcome her were her beloved husband, Jim, and her granddaughter, Jodie.
Left to cherish her memory and mourn her passing are her children, Ro-Jean (Tony), Terry, and Micheal (Tammy); her grandchildren, Tammy (Kelly), Greg, Jeremy, and Evan (Shaunti); and her great-grandchildren, Brady and Brooklyn.
Born in 1933 and raised in Gladstone, she was the youngest of three children. We have been told that Mom was a bit mischievous as a child, and she was also an accomplished pianist and vocalist.
In the spring of 1953, a handsome young man walked into her workplace and made a smart remark. Mom’s immediate response was to throw an egg at him—and hit him! The rest, as they say, is history.
Mom and Dad began their married life in the Cordova-Minnedosa area. Dad worked as a grain buyer, and together they soon established themselves in the little community they called home.
In 1964, Dad was transferred to Dominion City. With their two children, Ro-Jean and Terry, they packed up and moved at Christmastime to begin a new chapter of their lives on King Street. Shortly afterward, their third child, Micheal, was born.
Over the years, Mom and Dad built a large circle of friends and shared countless good times, laughter, and more than a few memorable antics.
On May 7, 2000, Dad said goodbye to Mom for the last time.
Mom wore many hats throughout her life. She was the Scrabble Queen, a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher, custodian at RVS, and a waitress at Snydal’s and the Queen’s Hotel. But of all the roles she held, the one she was most proud of was being a devoted grandmother, great-grandmother, babysitter, and enthusiastic cheerleader for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She could tell you about every rink, ballpark, and soccer pitch across Manitoba where she proudly sat and cheered them on—not to mention the many hot dogs she enjoyed along the way!
As a grandmother, one of the greatest heartbreaks of her life was saying goodbye to her granddaughter, Jodie, on September 2, 2014. We take comfort in knowing they are together once again.
Mom was always among the first to volunteer and the first to donate. She was generous with her time, her talents, and her kindness. And everyone who knew her also knew just how delicious her sticky buns were.
In her later years, she found great enjoyment in knitting and crocheting. The number of afghans she lovingly made and shared with others is far too numerous to count. Each one was a gift of warmth and care, much like Mom herself.
Mom was a friend to all. She would always stop to ask how someone was doing and would remember to ask about their family as well. She took a genuine interest in people and made those around her feel seen and cared for.
Just shy of her 93rd birthday, Mom leaves us with a lifetime of treasured memories. Although our hearts are broken, they are also filled with gratitude for the many blessings Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma brought into our lives.
Her love, kindness, generosity, and unwavering support of her family will live on in all who knew and loved her.
The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Dominion City United Church, with coffee and dainties to follow.
A private family interment will take place at Dominion City Cemetery.
She won’t miss a game – she’ll just have better seats.
