It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother and best friend, Adelaide Freund, on April 20, 2026 at the Grunthal Menno Home at the age of 99 years.
Mom was predeceased by Dad (Rudolf), sons Randy and Reg, and grandson Tyler Freund.
Left to cherish Mom’s memory are son Donnie (Charlene), daughter Gaylene and (Derrick) Mehling, and one daughter-in-law Diana Freund; seven grandchildren: Austin (Nayeli) and Robin Freund and special friend Jacob Thomas; Lyle (Shelley), Cole (Rebecca), Trent (Kallyn) Mehling; Branden (Theresa) and Dayna Freund and special friend Mitch Valks; eight great-grandchildren, one brother Ron (Fran) Giese, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Mom was born on December 15, 1926, and was raised in the R.M. of Hanover. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She started singing in the choir at the age of 15 and continued until the St. Paul’s Lutheran German Church service ended.
In her younger years, Mom worked in the beet fields and at Johnny’s Grill Cafe. At age 19, she went to work in Winnipeg for Globe Light Batteries.
In 1947, Mom and Dad got married and moved to Vancouver, where Mom worked at the Vancouver General Hospital. After a stint in Vancouver, they came back and bought a quarter of land in the R.M. of La Broquerie and started dairy farming in 1952 with Jersey cattle.
Mom was the secretary for the Jersey Cattle Club for six years. As life got busy with four children, farming, choir, quilting, gardening, flowers, and Bible study, she gave up the secretary position.
They farmed for 26 years. They sold the farm in 1978 and built a home on a 10 acre parcel of land given to them from Mom’s parents.
In 1980, Mom was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had one kidney removed. She kept busy with church and German Ladies’ Bible Study for 13 years. From the years 1992 til 1996, Mom made many quilts and raffled them to raise funds for the Bethesda Cancer Care Foundation. In 2009, she had half of her other kidney removed.
In 2005, Mom and Dad lost their youngest son Randy and life was forever changed.
They moved into Fernwood Place in Steinbach. Mom made many friends at Fernwood and kept busy knitting and crocheting.
Mom worked and volunteered at Friedensfeld Community Center into her 90’s.
The family wishes to thank Pastor Tim Perry, Parish Assistant Stephen Bilski, Marilyn Engel, Grunthal Menno Home and Crossings Funeral Care for their care and compassion.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 24, 2026 at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 465 Henry St., in Steinbach, MB with viewing one hour prior to the service.
