Susie was born to her parents Abram and Margaret Wiebe in the R.M. of Hanover, in the school district of Greenland, in their home on the farm. She was the first of nine children – five girls and four boys. She was predeceased by her parents and two of her brothers, Henry and Peter. She is survived by her sisters Annie Kehler of Steinbach, Adina Penner of Edmonton, Mary Plett (Henry) of Landmark, and Laura Reimer of Virden; also, by her brothers Ben (Marina) of Oakbank, and Abe (Marion) of Kola; and by many nieces and nephews from all over Canada.
Susie graduated to her eternal home with Jesus last Saturday, September 15th afternoon, from her home of five years at Rest Haven Nursing Home, Steinbach, MB.
Susie was always a very caring person, especially for her family and extended family. Since she never had children of her own, she pretty near adopted all of her nieces and nephews. I (Ben) believe that she may have prayed for each of them, even more than their parents.
Susie was very generous with her time. Even when she had a full-time job at Rest Haven, where she worked most of her life, when our father was diagnosed with cancer she took a year off from work to look after him at home. When our brother Peter was diagnosed with cancer she took several months to look after him at home. When Rose, Henry’s wife, had cancer, she took several months to help with Rose in their home. When Benny Penner was in the process of dying she spent several weeks assisting the family in Edmonton. So those of us siblings who had the privilege of visiting Susie and assisting her with life’s cares all believe she had earned that attention in advance.
Susie became a Christian at an early age, was baptized, and became a member at the Prairie Rose EMC church. Later in life, she became a member at the Steinbach EMC church where she remained a member until her passing.
Susie had a keen interest in travelling. She enjoyed local bus tours, and has also been overseas on several occasions, including walking the ‘great wall of China’. She had more slides and photo albums than anyone else I know. She loved to entertain her friends and show her slides from her many travels. Despite all her many exciting travel experiences, we think that none of them will compare to where she has travelled to now!
We, her surviving siblings, wish to extend our sincere thank-you to all of the staff at Rest Haven, who have looked after Susie so well over the years, and especially in the last months and weeks it took for her earthly body to finally wind down and accept the call to go to her final home.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior to the service. The burial will follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
If friends so desire, donations in memory of Susie may be made to the Evangelical Mennonite Conference Missions, 440 Main St.; Steinbach, MB R5G 1Z5.
