Obituary

Our Mom, Helen (Martens) Wiebe came into this world on September 8, 1930. She was born to her parents, Jacob and Maria Martens at Aberdeen, Saskatchewan. Her family moved around a lot in Saskatchewan in the dirty 30’s. Her schooling was at Motion school at Orley, SK. In April of 1948 the family moved to Altona, Manitoba. There she worked as a maid for other people. Then she worked in the laundry at the Altona hospital and later in the Winkler hospital.

She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in 1950 by bishop Peter Toews.

She had her first date with our dad, John Wiebe on March 1, 1959 and they were married on November 1,1959. The first winter of their married life they lived in the lumber camp at Matheson Island where Mom served as camp cook. Then in 1962 they moved to Tolstoi where they started farming. Our Mom loved to sew for her family. And sew she did! Anything from underwear to snowmobile suits to wedding suits and bridesmaids’ dresses. She did homecare for a few years, and later she took up scrapbooking and card making which she really loved. Baking was another thing she enjoyed. She was famous for her buns! She enjoyed selling her baking at farmers market and they also did market gardening before Dad’s stroke in 2011.

She had some health issues over the years, she had surgery on her feet. In 2004 she fell and broke her arm and was in the Winnipeg hospital for surgery. In 2002 Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and macular degeneration which was an extra hardship especially since she loved to read and scrapbook.

On March 30, 2011, Dad had a massive stroke which set our family’s life in turmoil. Since Dad was in the Vita Care Home, Mom moved into the Shady Oaks Lodge. The following year, 2012, Dad moved to the Menno Home. Mom was able to move into Greendale Estates into assisted living where she lived until her health came to the point where she needed more help and then moved into supportive living. We were so thankful that she could be close to Dad. She could come have meals with him and do activities at the Menno Home. Finally, in July 2016, she was moved into the Menno home as well. Her health gradually deteriorated, becoming weaker physically and her mind becoming more confused. We celebrated her 88th birthday on September 8th. Ten days later on September 18th at approximately 6:30 AM, surrounded by family, the angels came and carried her soul into the arms of Jesus. She loved her Savior dearly and was looking forward to going home.

Surviving are her loving husband John, four daughters and four sons: Mary (Jake) Reimer of Salmon Arm, BC; Annette (Barney) Wieler of Grunthal, MB; John (Martha) of Stuartburn, MB; Helen (John) Braun of Reinland, MB; Eva, of Steinbach, MB; Dave (Shirley) of Vita, MB; Jake (Marge) of Tolstoi, MB; Aron (Helen) of Winkler, MB, 36 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, one sister, one brother and their families.

She was predeceased by her parents and one brother.

As a family we would like to thank the caregivers in her life the last 5 years at Greendale and the Menno Home. Your loving care means more than words can express.
