Agnes Hilda Sawatzky was born on June 20, 1927, the eldest of six children, born to Cornelius and Aganetha Sawatzky. Mom had five siblings, three brothers and two sisters. However, her three brothers died in infancy.
They were a farm family in Saskatchewan, but farming was tough in those years, so they ended up moving to Manitoba.
They were welcomed into a very close Mennonite Brethren Church community in north Winnipeg. This is where Mom and Dad met, fell madly in love and were married April 6, 1946. Mom gave birth to five children by the time she was 26 years old, unheard of in that day and age. Mom and Dad had seven children – Harry, Irene, Rudy, Art, Laura, Ruth and Herb.
Mom and Dad lived in Winnipeg for their first three years of marriage and eventually moved to the Cartwright area to take over Grampa Sawatzky’s farm in 1950. It was a tough life but obviously they survived to share their story. And were there ever a lot of stories. Many of you have heard most of them. Mom loved to share, very willingly, her many, many joys and sorrows.
Eventually they moved here to Steinbach when dad took up his position as a farm labour placement officer.
We, as a family, had many wonderful gatherings in their home. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, etc. etc. and our mother was a very, very good cook.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Bill, November 29, 2017, her wonderful sister, Laura in June 2017 and two beautiful granddaughters, Nancy Renee’ Bromley, February 1975 and Cory Dawn Lepp in April 2000.
A huge debt of gratitude goes to the fabulous staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home where mom lived these past six years.
The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. The burial will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB prior to the service.
