James (Jim) Sobering passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach Manitoba at the age of 75.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nita; children: Gary (Rhonda), Connie, Phil (Melody), and Tammy (Wayne); grandchildren: Stefan, James (Alisha), Alex (Mike), Kaitlin, Nick (Shannon), Corey, and Brock; great-grandchildren: Ellie, Remi, Maren, Ashton, Triston, Elijah; and siblings, Henry, Art, and Helen.
He was predeceased by siblings, Ed, Ben, Bert, Eva, John, Bill, Frank, Anne, and Walter.
Jim was born on February 13, 1943 in Steinbach MB to Heinrich & Helena Sobering. He met his soulmate, Nita, on a blind date in 1961 and they were married in 1963. Jim was born, grew up, married, raised his family and retired all in the same place on the east side of town. He worked hard for the Highways Department for over 40 years. He spent his weekends cutting trees and even cut the trees to build the house they have lived in since 1983. Jim started his working life by doing odd jobs, one of them was helping in the graveyard with his favorite uncle, and eventually retiring as a sub-foreman for Manitoba Highways and Transportation.
The couple welcomed four children into their home and Jim set about teaching them to have a hardworking and respectful attitude. His family remembers him as a loving father who worked tirelessly to keep food on the table to provide the best life possible. Jim was a kindhearted man and often made us laugh while teasing us about whatever he could. He was a caring individual who loved spending time with his family, be it working on a project in his shop or watching TV with his children. Recently Jim has loved spending time with his great grandchildren and welcomed any moment he could have with them.
