Obituary

Herbert Jack Wiebe, aged 68, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Rest Haven Care Home in Steinbach, MB., after an 11-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Herb was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and friend who was enthusiastically involved in his community.

Born on July 25, 1956, in Winnipeg, MB., to Henry and Mary Wiebe. He grew up in Winnipeg, MB., where he developed a deep love for the Lord, his family and friends. After high school Herb attended Columbia Bible Institute in Abbotsford, BC., for one year. Then he moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario, where he met Linda (Joosse) Wiebe and shortly thereafter proposed marriage. After one semester at Winkler Bible Institute in Winkler, MB., he moved back to Niagara Falls, Ont., to prepare for a life together with Linda. Herb had many passions in life including spending time with friends, playing all types of sports, especially golf. In the later years camping with Linda filled the summer months, along with fishing with his friends. He had a zest for life and his sense of humor could light up any room. He was especially known for his desire to serve those around him through contributing skilled labor to home projects. Herb built three homes and renovated two others for his family.

Ultimately, Herb’s life was shaped by faith in Christ. In 1983 Herb and Linda answered the call to serve in the mission field. This was followed by three years at Bethany Bible Institute in Hepburn, SK. During these years they were interns at Waldheim MB Church, in Waldheim, SK. Herb also was active in prison ministry. They completed six months of training in Pasadena and Fresno, CA in the fall of 1986. In 1988 the family spent the year in San Jose, Costa Rica learning Spanish. In December of 1988 they landed in Bogota, Colombia to begin serving at Iglesia Dios Es Amor (God Is Love Church) with Mennonite Brethren Mission Services till June of 1993. Herb also served as the Youth Pastor at Westwood Community Church from 1994-1997. Herb and Linda worked with Global Outreach/Mexican Mission Ministries from 1998 – 2000 raising funds to build a seminary in Pachuca, Mexico. This was followed by serving at Inner City Youth Alive in Winnipeg, MB from 2005 – 2011. When Herb was not in vocational ministry he worked as a flooring installer, while staying active in volunteering at church. Herb and Linda have been members at Kleefeld Evangelical Mennonite Church since 2000. During that time, they served as Deacons and Herb also taught Sunday School among many other roles.

Herb finished his flooring installer career at Steinbach Flooring Canada after being forced into retirement by his disease in January of 2020. Linda established self and family managed care, a government program, allowing Herb to remain home in Kleefeld, MB., until an opening became available in a care home. He received homecare from MacKenzie “Mac” Wiebe, his brother Harry Wiebe, Madi Stoesz-Hepner, and Brad Friesen. In June of 2022 Herb transitioned to Rest Haven Care Home in Steinbach, MB. Herb and Linda have shared their journey with this disease through social media, radio interviews and newspaper articles. They are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support they received from their family, friends, church community, and incredible staff at Rest Haven Care Home.

Linda, Herb Jr. and Matthew want to give special acknowledgement to Abe Esau and Walter Toews for being deeply involved in Herb’s care by keeping him as active as his condition allowed.

Herb is survived by: Linda Elizabeth Wiebe, (spouse) Steinbach, MB; Herbert Gerry Wiebe (son) and Jenae Joy Wiebe (daughter-in-law), Kaiya Christine Wiebe (Granddaughter), Breckyn Monroe Wiebe (granddaughter), and Treyson Scott Wiebe (Grandson) El Paso, TX; Matthew Henry (son) and Lauren Sellen (daughter-in-law) Copenhagen, Denmark.; Henry (Susan) Wiebe (brother) and family, Winnipeg, MB; Harry (Donna) Wiebe (brother) and family, Winnipeg, MB; Connie (Steve) Rempel (Sister) and family, Morden, MB; David (Rosalie) Wiebe (brother) and family, Winnipeg, MB; Nancy Morningstar (sister) and family, Vineland, ON; Len Bolle (brother-in-law) and family, Vineland, ON; Jake (Verna) Joosse (brother-in-law) and family, St. Catherine’s, ON.
