Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Melanie Martens (née Kiesman), who passed away peacefully at the age of 59 in Mitchell, Manitoba, on May 21, 2025. She fought a brief, but brave battle with cancer.

Born on November 2, 1965, in Teulon, Manitoba, Melanie was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend who lived her life with compassion, determination, and a heart full of love.

A lifelong helper, her kindness, empathy, and determination led her back to school as an adult to pursue a career in social work. She found her calling at the women’s shelter, where her warm heart and listening ear made a lasting impact on the lives of many.

Known for being deeply accepting and non-judgmental, Melanie created a safe space for anyone who needed it. With a rare gift for making others feel seen, heard, and valued, her presence was both comforting and uplifting.

Steinbach was home for many years until a move to Mitchell brought her closer to family during her illness. Thrifting, shopping, folding laundry, people-watching, and simple family outings – especially to AD Penner Park with her grandson Alex – were among the everyday joys she cherished most. Family meant everything to her, and she brought warmth and meaning to even the smallest moments.

Melanie is lovingly remembered by her children: Cyndal (Eric), Dezmin, Jaylen, Bronte, and Raya; her grandchildren: Jett, Alex, Zarah, Aleena, Asher, and Gage; her mother Audrey Kiesman; and her siblings Crystal, Jodean, Blair, Derrick and their families. She was predeceased by her father, Lawrence Kiesman, and her grandparents.

A celebration of Melanie’s life will be held at a later date.

In honor of her kind and loving spirit, the family asks that instead of flowers or donations, you spend time with a loved one or do something kind for someone you love – just as Melanie would have done.
