Obituary

Cornelius K Martens, age 86 of Steinbach, Manitoba, passed away peacefully with his Queen Faith by his side on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.

He is survived by his wife Faith Martens and their five sons, Bruce (Kellie), Fenton, Vince, Trig and Scott (Marion), 33 Grandchildren and 23 Great-Grandchildren. He will also be missed and remembered by his sisters Mary Braun, Anne Kruse, Susie (Lawrence) Dueck and his brother Leonard (Evelyn) Martens and foster brother Jon (Heather) Saxon.

He was predeceased by a brother Henry in infancy, his brothers and their spouses John (Leona) Martens, Abe (Norma) Martens, Pete (Olga) Martens, Jake (Helen) Martens, his two sisters Sarah Martens, Helen Reddekop and his two brothers-in-law Frank Braun and Walter Kruse.

Cornelius Martens was born March 12th, 1939, in the RM of Ste. Anne, Manitoba to Peter and Helena Martens. As a child Cornie loved going with family to the bush camps. Here they learned to operate equipment sawing lumber. At the age of 15, Cornie accepted Jesus into his heart and was baptized upon his confession of faith into Prairie Rose EMC.

In 1957 the Martens family sold their farm in Ste. Anne and bought a farm in Maryfield, Saskatchewan, which was a big change with all the trees, roots and stones. They worked extremely hard to clear land and make more farm ground. He helped his brother Jake with land clearing also during this time period.

In 1969 Cornie met the love of his life, Faith. He was instantly a father to Bruce(6), Fenton(5) and Vince(3). This was a monumental change in a bachelor’s life. He stepped into this role with confidence and love. In 1970, Trig was born and in 1973 Scott was born. Dad continued farming, going north to the bush camps until Scott was born.

After 1973 Cornie settled into farming during the summer months and ran his D7 Caterpillar locally during the winter months. Cornie loved to camp and fish with his family. He loved watching his boys play hockey during the winter months. He also liked spending time at Kenosee Lake Bible Camp volunteering his time along with Faith. Cornie and Faith were very involved with the Kola Church and community.

In 2009 Cornie and Faith decided to sell the farm in Maryfield and move to Brandon, Manitoba. Here they retired and lived until 2021.

In 2021 Cornie and Faith decided to move to Steinbach Manitoba due to a diagnosis of Dementia. This is where Cornie lived out his final years. He went into Rest Haven to get the care he deserved and needed. Faith was by Cornie’s side when he peacefully passed from this earth.

The livestreamed funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.
