Obituary

On Saturday morning, June 28, 2025, our beloved mother, grandma, great grandma, sister and friend – Grace Pearl Holme (nee Mantie) passed away peacefully at her home, at the age of 82 years.

Mom is survived by her three children, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her daughter Sherry (Gary) Warkentin with Krystal (Peter) Dueck – Jordan, Caleb, baby on the way; Tyler (Margaret) – Julia (in heaven), Nathanael; Larissa (Hervè) Gbedji; Samuel (Kayla) – Mckenzie, Malachi, Micah; Abigail; Sarah; Josiah; Andrew; her son Terry (Rachel) Holme with Luke, Zac and Gil; her son Russ (Crystal) Holme, with Treston, Laynee and Hailey.

She is also survived by her sisters Lillian (Wally) Krebs, and Irene Schmidtke. She was predeceased by her husband Wilfred in 2012, and parents Emil and Lydia Mantie, her siblings Betty Schmidtke, Ron Mantie, and sister Joyce in infancy.

Mom was born on February 3, 1943, in Steinbach, Manitoba. She grew up in the Friedensfeld area. At the age of 14, she moved to Steinbach after the passing of her father. Mom and her sister Lil worked hard to support the family. Her first job led her out to the Brokenhead area where she worked on her Aunt and Uncle’s farm. After coming back home to Steinbach, she started working at the local sewing factory and her hard work ethic quickly led her to becoming a forelady. She worked there until getting married to Dad.

Mom and Dad met at a family wedding and were married on June 5, 1965. They loved to attend local dances, with siblings in tow, and would dance the night away. She was an avid bowler – even joining the local bowling league in town! They moved to Winnipeg where Dad worked as a milk truck driver and Mom stayed home to raise the family. They moved back to the family farm in 1970 and started dairy farming full time at Holmes Holsteins.

On the farm Mom was always working hard. Whether it was milking cows, feeding calves, making meals, tending the yard and vegetable garden, or her many flowers, there was always something to do and she loved the farming life. Even though farming was busy, Mom and Dad always made it a priority to take the family to church every Sunday. When it was time to take a break, she enjoyed camping and fishing with friends and family. Mom was farming until the very end! She would call every single day wanting to know if we got rain, how many cows had calved, how the crops were doing and how many bales had been made.

Mom also loved her sports. She watched every single Blue Jays and Jets game and also enjoyed curling. If you needed to know the latest score of a game, she was the person to ask. She also really enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities. Between singing performances, hockey, baseball, Ukrainian Dance, there was lots to keep her busy. Watching them play or perform gave her so much joy. She was so proud of all of them. If she wasn’t there to watch in person, she was calling later in the day to find out how they did. She took a special joy in her great grandchildren these last few years, as it was like being a grandma all over again. Her face would light up every time she heard about a new baby on the way and enjoyed having her great grandchildren over to play.

Mom was also always ready for an adventure. Whether it was a trip in the semi with Russ or Tyler, tagging along on road trips, trips out to Wisconsin to visit Terry, concerts, camping or fishing trips… she wanted to do it all. She also had many hobbies over the last few years. Colouring Bible pages, puzzles or diamond paintings could often be found on the dining room table. All spring she would be checking out the various greenhouses in the area to find the best flowers. She had many beautiful flowers that adorned her front porch and backyard every summer.

Mom will be remembered most for her kind character, her love for visiting with family and friends, and her pride in her grandchildren. The family wishes to send their thanks to all the neighbours and friends who were always taking care of her. Your kindness is so appreciated.

The funeral service for Grace Holme will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Evangelical Church, Steinbach, MB, with viewing prior one hour to the service. Burial will take place after the reception at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, PTH 12 South.
